as a tottering wall shall ye be, and like a broken hedge.

Their device is only how to put him out whom God will exalt : their delight is in lies; they give good words with their mouth, but curse with their heart.

Nevertheless, my soul, wait thou still upon God: for my hope is in Him.

He truly is my strength and my salvation: He is my defence, so that I shall not fall.

In God is my health, and my glory the rock of my might, and in God is my trust.

O put your trust in Him alway, ye people pour out your hearts before Him, for God is our hope.

As for the children of men, they are but vanity: the children of men are deceitful upon the weights, they are altogether lighter than vanity itself.

O trust not in wrong and robbery, give not yourselves unto vanity if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

God spake once, and twice I have also heard the same: that power belongeth unto God;

And that Thou, Lord, art merciful for Thou rewardest every

man according to His work.

The Church's trust in God in time of trouble. PSALM 74. GOD, wherefore art Thou absent from us so long: why is Thy wrath so hot against the sheep of Thy pasture?

O think upon Thy congregation: whom Thou hast purchased and redeemed of old.

Think upon the tribe of Thine inheritance: and mount Sion, wherein Thou hast dwelt.

Lift up Thy feet, that Thou mayest utterly destroy every enemy which hath done evil in Thy sanctuary.

:

Thine adversaries roar in the midst of Thy congregations and set up their banners for tokens. He that hewed timber afore out of the thick trees was known to bring it to an excellent work.

But now they break down all the carved work thereof with axes and hammers.

:

They have set fire upon Thy holy places and have defiled the dwelling place of Thy Name, even unto the ground.

Yea, they said in their hearts, Let us make havock of them altogether thus have they burnt up all the houses of God in. the land.

We see not our tokens, there is not one prophet more : no, not one is there among us, that understandeth any more.

O God, how long shall the adversary do this dishonour : how long shall the enemy blaspheme Thy Name, for ever?

Why withdrawest_Thou Thy hand why pluckest Thou not Thy right hand out of Thy bosom to consume the enemy?

For God is my King of old : the help that is done upon earth He doeth it Himself.

Thou didst divide the sea through Thy power: Thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.

O deliver not the soul of Thy | firmity: but I will remember the turtle-dove unto the multitude of years of the right hand of the most the enemies and forget not the Highest. congregation of the poor for ever.

Look upon the covenant: for all the earth is full of darkness, and cruel habitations.

O let not the simple go away ashamed but let the poor and needy give praise unto Thy Name. Arise, O God, maintain Thine

own

cause : remember how the

foolish man blasphemeth Thee daily.

:

Forget not the voice of Thine enemies the presumption of them that hate Thee increaseth ever more and more.

PSALM 77.

WILL cry unto God with my voice even unto God will I cry with my voice, and He shall hearken unto me.

In the time of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran, and ceased not in the night-season; my soul refused comfort.

When I am in heaviness, I will think upon God when my heart is vexed, I will complain.

I will remember the works of the Lord and call to mind Thy wonders of old time.

:

I will think also of all Thy works and my talking shall be of Thy doings.

:

Thy way, O God, is holy: who is so great a God as our God?

Thou art the God that doeth wonders and hast declared Thy power among the people.

Thou hast mightily delivered Thy people: even the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw Thee, O God, the waters saw Thee, and were afraid the depths also were troubled.

The clouds poured out water, the air thundered: and Thine arrows went abroad.

The voice of Thy thunder was heard round about the lightnings shone upon the ground; the earth was moved, and shook withal.

Thy way is in the sea, and Thy paths in the great waters: and Thy footsteps are not known.

Thou leddest Thy people like sheep by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so feeble, that I cannot speak. I have considered the days of old and the years that are past. a clean heart. I call to remembrance my song: and in the night I commune with mine own heart, and search out my spirits.

Will the Lord absent Himself for ever and will He be no more intreated?

Is His mercy clean gone for ever: and is His promise come utterly to an end for evermore?

Hath God forgotten to be gracious and will He shut up His loving-kindness in displeasure?

And I said, It is mine own in

Nevertheless, my feet were almost gone my treadings had well-nigh slipt.

And why? I was grieved at the wicked: I do see the ungodly in such prosperity.

For they are in no peril of death: but are lusty and strong. They come in no misfortune like other folk : neither are they plagued like other men.

And this is the cause that they are so holden with pride: and overwhelmed with cruelty.

I will keep my mouth as it were with a bridle while the ungodly is in my sight.

:

I held my tongue, and spake nothing I kept silence, yea, even from good words; but it was pain and grief to me.

My heart was hot within me, and while I was thus musing the fire kindled and at the last I spake with my tongue;

Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days: that I may be certified how long I have to live.

Behold, Thou hast made my days as it were a span long and mine age is even as nothing in respect of Thee; and verily every man living is altogether vanity.

For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.

And now, Lord, what is my hope : truly my hope is even in Thee.

Deliver me from all mine offences and make me not a rebuke unto the foolish.

:

I became dumb, and opened not my mouth for it was Thy doing. Take Thy plague away from me :

:

I am even consumed by the means of Thy heavy hand.

When Thou with rebukes dost chasten man for sin, Thou makest his beauty to consume away, like as it were a moth fretting a garment every man therefore is but vanity.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with Thine ears consider my calling hold not Thy peace at my

tears.

For I am a stranger with Thee and a sojourner, as all my fathers

were.

O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength: before I go hence, and be no more seen.

PSALM 90.

men be so strong that they come to fourscore years yet is their strength then but labour and sorrow; so soon passeth it away, and we are gone.

But who regardeth the power of Thy wrath for even thereafter as a man feareth, so is Thy displeasure. O teach us to number our days : that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Turn Thee again, O Lord, at the last and be gracious unto Thy servants.

O satisfy us with Thy mercy, and that soon so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.

Comfort us again now after the time that Thou hast plagued us : and for the years wherein we have

Thou turnest man to destruction : again Thou sayest, Come again, ye children of men.

For a thousand years in Thy sight are but as yesterday: seeing that is past as a watch in the night.

As soon as Thou scatterest them they are even as a sleep and fade away suddenly like the grass.

In the morning it is green, and groweth up but in the evening it is cut down, dried up, and withered. For we consume away in Thy displeasure and are afraid at Thy wrathful indignation.

Thou hast set our misdeeds before Thee and our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance.

:

For when Thou art angry all our days are gone we bring our years to an end, as it were a tale that is told.

Shew Thy servants Thy work : and their children Thy glory.

And the glorious Majesty of the Lord our God be upon us : prosper Thou the work of our hands upon us, O prosper Thou our handywork.

We therefore meekly pray,
May God in all our words and deeds
Keep us from harm this day.

May He in love restrain us still,
From tones of strife and words

And wrap around and close our eyes

To earth's absorbing vanities.

May wrath, and thoughts that gender shame,

Ne'er in our breasts abide, And holy abstinences tame Of wanton flesh the pride.

So when the weary day is o'er, And night and stillness come once more,

Blameless, and clear from spot or stain,

We may repeat the solemn strain.
