vation on board the Espagne, the aforefaid fhip's latitude was 37° 14" North, measured the fame day; that fince noon it had failed direct Eaft; that from the end of the eclipfe to its being in the meridian of Cape St. Vincent it had failed 301 fea miles Eaft, making 100 fea leagues, reckoning 20 leagues to a degree, remains to be known the difference of meridians of the faid Cape and the meridian of the different obseryatories of the capital cities of Europe, in order to determine the part of the fea in which the obfervation was made relatively to the obfervatories.

The folar spots were feen very diftinctly both before and after the eclipfe; there were fix of them in all: two very near each other on the Eastern part of the disk; two towards the middle of the disk, likewife very near one

Les taches du Soleil furent vues tres diftinctement avant et après l'Eclipse ; elles étoient au nombre de fix: deux à la partie de l'eft du difque peu diftantes Pune de l' autre: deux vers le milieu du difque auffi allez près l'une de l'autre :

The corrected altitude of the center of the Sun above the horizon, taken at the moment the eclipfe ended, was 36° 31". The atmosphere was very clear; the wind WNW, and not very strong. No clouds were visible, as is often the cafe at the fea, nor were there any till' near fix, when there arose fome just above the horizon.

The luminous ring made fo ftrong an impreffion on me, as well from the beauty and brightness of its colour as from its rapid and uniform circular motion that I could neither reckon the stars vifible in each interval from the total obscurity to the end of the eclipfe, nor make feveral other obfervations on the colour and vivacity of their fight.

La hauteur corrigée du centre du Soleil fur l'horizon, prife au moment que l'Eclipfe finit étoit 36 degres 31 m. L'atmosphere étoit très net et l'air de P'Ouest Nord-Ouest de moyenne force; on ne voyoit aucun nuage comme cela arrive fouvent en mer; ce ne fut que vers les fix heures qu'il f'en forma quelques uns fur l'horizon.

L'anneau lumineux me fit une impreffion fi agreable tant par la beauté et l'eclat de fa couleur que par fon mouvement circulaire uniforme et rapide que je ne pus ni compter les etoiles vifibles dans chaque intervale depuis la totale obcurité jufqu'á la fin, ni faire d'autres obfervations fur la couleur et la vivacité de leur lumiére: Je m'attachai uniquement à l'anneau et enfuite au point lumi

light. All I attended to was, first, the ring, and then the luminous speck which appeared through the disk of the Sun. These made the fame impreffion on all who obferved with me.

It is not easy to make celeftial observations at sea with the fame precision and delicacy as they are made at land, on account of the motion of the fhip, and want of convenience to use the inftruments. It would have been difficult (even if we had had a Micrometer) to have measured either the breadth of the ring, in order to see if it was equal every where, or the distance between the luminous fpeck feen on the disk of the Moon and its limb. I regret, however, exceedingly not having been able to make obfervations which would have been of such use in astronomy.

Il auroit été difficile, quand meme on anroit été pourvu d'un Micromêtre, de mefurer la largeur de l'anneau pour examiner f'il étoit égal partout, comme auffi la distance du point lumineux vu fur le difque de la Lune jufqu'a fon limbe. J'ai bien du regret de n'avoir pu faire ces obfervations qui auroient été d'un grand avantage pour la Phifique des aftres!
