every material point) were scattered, confufed and drawn up in the natural order they offered themselves to me, when the neceffity of difcuffing or defending any part of my method obliged me to study the nature of the plant, to try to find out the reafon of some phenomena which the experience of many years had taught me the existence of; but I have been obliged to follow a different method now that these observations are to be submitted to the natural judges of every thing that can have influence upon the progrefs of useful knowledge. In order to form a proper judgment of the merit of the mode of culture I propose, it is neceffary to be acquainted with the plant and the climate in which it grows.

Obfervations on the climate.

In the Windward Islands, the weather is commonly dry > from the 15th of February to the 15th of May. The rains are moderate till August; they are very copious the two or three following months, and afterwards decrease : till February; confequently there is a fucceffion of nine months rain, and of three months dry weather. The annexed table fhews the quantity of rain fallen at Grenada in the East quarter from the first of June 1772 to the first of June 1773, and this is the rain of a common year.

Dans les Ifles Antilles, du 15 Fevrier au 15 May, il fait ordinairement fec, les pluyes font moderées jusqu'en Aouft, elles font tres fortes pendant les deux où trois mois fuivants, elles diminuent enfuite jufqu'en Fevrier: voila donc une fucceffion de neuf mois de pluye fuivie de trois mois de fec; voici le tableau de la pluye tombée à la Grenade dans la partie de l'eft depuis le 1 Juin 1772 jufqu'au 1 Juin 1773; c'est le tableau d'une année commune.

The natural biftory of the cane.

There are but few of the minute particulars I am going to mention, but what are some how or other connected with my method.

The upper part of the cane, commonly called the head, is the best plant that can be used to propagate it, fee fig. 7. see likewise fig. 1.; it is the part from / to ʼn, which in this figure is without its leaves. It is a known fact, that the body of the cane does not come up well, unless there are continued rains from the time of its being put into the ground, till all the shoots are out and pretty strong.

La partie fuperieure de la canne appellée communement la tête, eft le meilleur plan dont on puiffe fe fervir pour la multiplier, v. fig. 7. v. auffi fig. 1. c'eft la partie depuis jufqu'a n, elle eft dans cette figure depouillée de ses feuilles: il est reconnu que le corps de la canne ne reuffit point à moins d'une pluye continuelle depuis le moment qu'il eft en terre, jusqu'au moment où tous Les jets font fortis et affez vigoureux.

Hiftory of the roots of the fugar cane, and of its productions under ground.

If the plant be put into the ground as soon as it is cut, and the weather happens to be very hot and dry, a fortnight often paffes before the eye can discover any alteration in the two or three most promising joints; the first being too hard (fee a fig. 2.) become immediately dry; the others (fee from y to ≈ in the fame figure) are only grafs, and produce nothing, unless when the laft happens to fhoot at its extremity.

When the dry weather continues, but fo as not materially to affect the foil in contact with the inferior part of the plant, one discovers at the end of three weeks, about that part of the joint which lies undermöft in the trench, fome

1o, Si le plan eft mis en terre auffi tôt qu'il eft coupé, et qu'il furvienne de grandes chaleurs fans pluye, il eft fouvent quinze jours fans que l'oeil decouvre la moindre alteration dans les deux ou trois noeuds de la plus grande efpérance; les premiers, trop durs, v. a, fig. 2. font d'abord deffechês; les autres, herbacés, v. y jusqu'a z, ne produifent rien à moins que le dernier ne fe developpe par fon extremité.
