I have often endeavoured to direct this active, nimble, and obedient fluid which operates upon our fenfations, towards my other organs of perception; but have not yet been able to flatter myself with the leaft hope of fucceeding, in the process. It has never yet been able to affift me to hear, fee, fmell, or tafte, with greater energy than I am at any other time capable of.

But perhaps 'tis better as it is, and that I fhould be difappointed in fo prefumptuous an experiment: for an ecftafy feizing upon all the fenfes, at once, might poffibly end in death, or diftraction: To quicken the perceptions of our fenfes, were, poffibly, as Pope expreffes it, to die of a rofe, in L. 4

Though indeed the economy of nature is most admirable, in this re gard for in proportion as any of our notices are agitated, the others repose themselves in apathy; fo that the foul, as it were, refts in the midst of action, and the fenfes ferve thus to relieve each other, by turns.

Stay, a little. I have not done with myself, yet awhile. I hope I entertain you-I elevate and furprize you, at least. But this is a long letter, for me. You know my manner of writing, and you must have patience: till then ext Pennyroft, to hear further from me; when

In the mean time, give me leave to fubfcribe myself, dear Sir, your truly fincere friend, though I muft ftill remain your unknown humble fervant.

It is lucky, perhaps, for the world, that this perfon has never been able to communicate this fecret, or transfer the fupernatural faculty he is himself poffeffed

poffeffed of, to others-For he might certainly propagate whatever doctrines he pleased, and have all mankind for his difciples, upon the manifeftation of fuch a miracle, as this. made profelytes, by only promifing fenfuality, in reverfion-but this arch→ prophet must beat the poor Muffulman, quite out of the field (as the Czarina is literally doing, at present) who could afford them one, in hand. Nay, is he not in poffeffion of one attribute of a Divinity, already, whofe will, alone, is an act? But volenti nihil difficile, is unhappily not a general maxim, in this cafe.

But now, fince we happen not to be in a capacity of going fnacks in the
