[The insertion of any article in this List is not to be considered as pledging us to the approbation of its contents, unless it be accompanied by some express notice of our favourable opinion. "The Contrast; 99

Chapters on National Education. By the Rev. R. M. Macbrair, M.A. Pp. 126. Simpkin and Co.-The Chapters announced are twelve in number, and are thus entitled: "Weeds and Thorns ;" "Two Remedies;" "The Landscape;" "The Desert;" "The Rose, the Blue-Bell, and the Shamrock;" "The high-pressure Engine;" The Factory and the Plough;" "Church and Chapel;" "A Garden; ""The Olive-Branch ;" "A Crusade." Under these enigmatical titles the author gives a series of essays, on points connected with the general subject, which, though written in a somewhat discursive style, contain some interesting and useful information on the state of education in various countries, and the necessity of farther improvement. On the question of National Education, as bearing on this country, the author pleads strenuously for the establishment of "a national system of education," in which "the denominational peculiarities of the scholars would not be interfered with, and it would be of little consequence to which section of the Christian church the master himself belonged.' And so far he appears inclined to adopt the general principles of the British and Foreign School Society, (though he makes no specific mention of it,) those general principles being strictly accordant, as the advocates of that Society would argue, with his general theory. Only, perhaps, he would give greater prominence to sound religious instruction, than those principles are deemed by

many sufficient to secure. The British and Foreign School Society would certainly claim the merit of allowing, if not that of encouraging, all that the author pleads for under the head of " religious instruction in public schools," in pp. 109, 111. His theory has, however, the capital defect, common to all theories of that class, of not including all the facts of the case to which it is intended to apply; and therefore, as a theory for universal adoption, it is inadmissible, and whether it be even very generally practicable with advantage, is a question on which wise and good men are far from being generally agreed. The question, so far as it concerns our own religious community, has had the serious consideration of the Conference; and the result has been the solemn judgment of that body, that, as far as possible, our societies and congregations should act upon the principle, "that schools designed for the religious education of the labouring classes ought to be conducted in distinct and avowed connexion with some particular branch of the visible church of Christ." On this point the author would appear to entertain a different opinion. He even fears that "the prevalence of denominational schools" may "tend to increase the differences that now exist; " that there may "be a new ground of dissension, arising from a greater collision of interests. This fear will be regarded by many persons as a visionary one. Indeed, the author himself appears sometimes to forget it; for at the distance of only a few pages, he says, “Good has
