It seems probable, that, though the chief feat of this kingdom fhall be filled by the Meffiah himself at Jerufalem, rebuilt by the new name of there,' Ezek. chap. laft, ver. laft, under 'whom out of Zion fhall go forth the

Now

Now this Son of Man, to whom this univerfal and everlasting kingdom is to be committed, is the fame with the most holy,' mentioned in the 24th verse of the 9th chapter of Daniel, where it is faid, that seventy weeks' of years, or a period of determined upon thy 490 years,

people,' &c. to anoint the most holy,' who in the following verfe, is ftiled the Meffiah, the prince.' From the going forth, of the commandment,' by Cyrus, king of Perfia, to reftore and to build Jerufalem,' after the Babylonish captivity, ⚫ unto the Meffiah the prince, shall be seven weeks' of years, ' and threefcore and two weeks' of years. Of him it is predicted, in the next verfe, fhall Meffiah be cut off, as he was by your mistaken anceftors, who delivered him into the hands of the Romans to be crucified. Hence, my Jewish friends, you plainly fee, that the crucified Jefus Ben-Jofeph of the Christians, was your Meffiah, the future king of Ifrael when converted to a faith in him; when Hofea iii. 5. the children of Ifrael shall

return, and feek the Lord their God, and • David their king,' Jefus the Meffiah, ‘and 'fhall fear the Lord their God and his goodness, in the latter days. His birth at Bethlehem recorded by the evangelift Luke is foretold in Micah v. 2. Out of thee, Bethlehem Euphratah, shall he 'come forth unto me, that is to be ruler in Ifrael.' And, verse 4. he fhall ftand and feed,' or rule, in the ftrength of the. Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God, and they,' Ifrael, fhall abide; for now fhall he be great unto the • ends of the earth; and this man fhall be the peace,' &c. This is he, of whom it is thus prophefied by Haggai ii. 7. the defire of all nations fhall come, and I will fill this house,' the fecond temple with 'glory,' with the glory of the presence of the defire of all nations, the prince of peace, pre-fignified by the prophet Zechariah, as I have repeatedly obferved, under the title of the man, whofe name is ⚫ the branch,' and my fervant the branch, the great branch of David, the rod from • the

build,' Zech. vi. 12, &c. the temple of the Lord, and he fhall bear the glory, ⚫ and shall fit and rule upon his throne, and he shall be a priest upon his throne.'

The next prophetical paffage, which plainly relates to the Meffiah, is contained in Zech. ix. 9. Rejoice, greatly, O daughter of Zion, fhout O daughter of Jerufalem, behold thy king cometh unto thee: he is just and having falvation,

lowly, and riding upon an afs, and upon · a colt the foal of an afs.' Now this prophecy was fulfilled, when Jefus rode on an afs into Jerufalem, as related by Luke in his 19th chapter.

In Zech. xi. 12. 'And I faid unto them,

if ye think good, give me my price; and if not forbear; fo they weighed for my price thirty pieces of filver,' Jehovah fpeaks in his own name, as though your mistaken ancestors fold him for thirty pieces of filver. But the meaning evidently

is,

is, that, as they bartered Jefus, the Meffiah, to Judas, according to Matthew's Gospel, for that sum of money, God regarded their felling Chrift his meffenger, as felling God who fent him. With this price, as the same evangelist relates, they purchased the

potter's field,' an event, which verified the prediction contained in the following verfe of Zechariah, and the Lord faid unto me,

caft it unto the potter, a goodly price, ⚫ that I was prized at of them: And I took the thirty pieces of filver, and caft them to the potter in the house of the Lord.'

The fame prophet affures us the time. will come, when Zech. xii. 10, 'they,' the converted Jews, fhall look upon me,' my Meffiah, at his fecond coming, whom they,' your unbelieving ancestors, have pierced;' and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only fon, and fhall be in bitternefs for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firft-born : In that day fhall there be a great mourn

ing in Jerufalem,' &c. The part of the prophecy,
