(T. S.) When any given sum of money is to be divided any number of persons, in proportion to each person's debt, claim, rate, profit or demand, a multiplier may be found, by which the same answer will be produced as by a stating in proportion. To find it, divide the whole sum thus to be divided, by the amount of all the claims, &c. &c. the answer thus produced will be the decimal multiplier, by which each debt, claim, &c. must be multiplied, and the answer must be reduced to its proper value.

EXAMPLES.

Were it required to divide £100. among 4 creditors, A, B, C, and D, A's bill being £75. B's £100. C's £150. and D's £175. add the four bills together, the total will be £500.; then 100 divided by 500, is equal to .2, the decimal multiplier, by which multiply each debt, and the product will be for A, £15. B, £20. C, £30. and D £35.£100. which was to be divided.

Nine merchants in company gained in trade £5675...17...6.; they had property in the concern as follows: A to the amount of £1005...19...6 B, £964. 2...4. C, £800. D, £704. E, £605

4. X, Y, and Z, lost £333. 3s. 3d.; X. had in the concern £222. 2s. 2d. Y, £444. 4s. 4d. and Z, £666. 6s. 6d. what was each person's loss?

5. The poor's rate in this parish is £25000, and the rental is £25000; I desire to know what must be paid yearly by A, whose rent is £542. 10s. 0. B, £364. 5s. 0, C, £200. 17. 6s. and D, £95. 6s. 8d. ?

6. Five houses are rated in the king's books as follows; A's, £1000, B's, £500, C's, £400, D's, 300, and E's, £200, what will each person have to pay for 1 year's taxes, when the demand for the whole is £107. 5s. Od. ?

Interest for days only, at 23, 4, 5, and 8 per cent.

If there are shillings, or shillings, pence, and farthings, in
the sum you want to find the interest of, reduce them to
the decimal of a £, then multiply the principal or given
Isum by the number of days, and divide the product by 7300,
if the interest be 5 per cent.; by 14600 at 2 per cent; by
9125 at 4 per cent.; and by 4562, 5, at 8 per cent.
N. B. The interest of any sum of money at 5 per cent, for a
year, is of the principal, and therefore the interest for
one day is × 365

Another Method, at any rate per cent.

When the rate of interest is either more or less than 5 per cent. Having reduced the principal, and multiplied by the number of days, divide by 7300, which will be equal to the interest of 5 per cent. Divide the interest thus found

by 5, and multiply the quotient by the given rate, and the product will be the answer.
