with the sign of the cross; I will not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified! I am His soldier and servant; O help me to fight manfully under his banner against sin, the world, and the devil, and to continue his faithful soldier and servant unto my life's end !—Amen.

A PRAYER

For the spirit of Faith and Power.

O LORD and heavenly Father, who hast given to me exceeding great and precious promises, that by them I might become partaker of the Divine nature, I beseech thee enable me so entirely to trust in them, that I may experience their efficacy in my soul. I come by thy invitation to dedicate myself to thee, and seek thereby thy grace and heavenly benediction. O may thy Spirit be poured upon me from on high! I am sinful, do thou wash me in the blood of Christ thy Son. I am ignorant, do thou enlighten me. I am weak, do thou strengthen me. I am wavering, do thou confirm me. I am desponding, do thou animate me. I have no confidence in myself, and put not my trust in anything that I do; do thou vouchsafe me confidence in thee, that I may be strengthened with all might by thy Spirit in the inner man. I am thy child, O Lord, by adoption and grace; do thou grant to me the spirit of a child

crying, Abba, Father. I am going to take upon myself my baptismal vows, do thou enable me by thy continual help to fulfil those vows. May all carnal affections die in me, and all things belonging to the Spirit live and grow in me. May I have power and strength to have victory and to triumph against the devil, the world, and the flesh. May I be endued with heavenly virtues. May thy fatherly hand be ever over me. May thy Holy Spirit be ever with me. And so lead me in the knowledge and obedience of thy word, that in the end I may obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ my Lord!-Amen.

HYMNS

SUITABLE FOR CATECHUMENS.

I.

(From the German.)

To thy Grace, O Lord, I flee,
Nothing am I without thee;

In thy path my footsteps lead,
And grant to me the strength I need.

To thy Truth I seek for light,
In my spirit's native night;

Thou alone canst shine within,

And chase the clouds of doubt and sin.

In thy Peace I refuge take,

When with care my heart would break;
O grant to me the bliss He won,
Who for my sins did once atone.

To thy Strength I make appeal,

For thou knowest how weak I feel;
Help me in thy path along,

Thy feeble child do Thou make strong.

For thy Blessing, Lord, I pray,
On this awful Covenant day;
May the bonds that now I bind
Twine for ever round my mind!

II.

COME, Holy Ghost, my soul inspire,
And lighten with celestial fire;
Thou the anointing Spirit art

Who dost thy seven-fold gifts impart ;

Thy blessed unction from above

Is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light

The dulness of my blinded sight;

Anoint and cheer my soiled face

With the abundance of thy grace; Teach me to know the Father, Son,

And thee, of both, to be but One:

That through the ages all along
This may be my endless song;
Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

III.

O FOR a heart to praise my God,
A heart from guilt set free;

A heart that's sprinkled with the blood
So freely shed for me.

An humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean;
Which neither life nor death can part
From Him that dwells within.

A heart resigned, submissive, meek, The great Redeemer's throne; Where only Christ is heard to speak, Where Jesus reigns alone.

Thy holy nature, Lord, impart,
Come quickly from above;
Write thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of Love.
