PREFACE

ONE object of this book is to deal with the Arithmetical and Geometrical principles underlying the calculations in textile production, and the calculations in the running and output of textile machinery.

A second object of the book is to elucidate by examples the theory and practice in working out problems for ascertaining quantitative results, costs, and ratios of output, in all classes of yarn and fabric manufacture.

The author has found that the average textile student commits certain formulæ and rules to memory, and applies them mechanically; he is not sufficiently grounded in the theory and science on which these formula and rules are based and constructed. It has, therefore, been sought in this treatise to give a full explanation of these, side by side with an exposition of the mathematical problems peculiar to productive routine, and work, in the spinning and weaving industries.

Each variety of calculation, relative to the different branches of these industries, has been treated of, including Woollen and Worsted Spinning, Woollen and Worsted Weaving, Mill Management, Cotton Spinning, Plain and Fancy Cotton Weaving, and Linen and Silk Weaving.

All examples are worked step by step from first principles, the reason for each step being given. From these examples it will be observed that a knowledge of the various methods of counting yarns and of the various sett systems in use is all that is really required. With a clear understanding of the basic factors on which textile as well as other calculations are formulated, the student perceives the theory as well as the practice comprised in such calculations, and is enabled to work them out with or without reference to tabulated data.

To this end it has been considered more valuable to give illustrative examples, with fully worked out details, than sets of exercises which may be readily obtained.

Attention may be drawn to the following special points :(i) The use of Logarithms and the Slide Rule is encouraged
