TO THE READER.
In offering the following discourses to the public, the Author would just state, that generally speaking, they were written for the instruction of a plain Country Congregation, without the remotest idea of publication. They pretend not to “excellency of speech, nor of wisdom; ” and those who look for novelty in them,
will be disappointed: the Author's sole object being “ to preach Christ crucified; to set forth with great plainness, “ the truth as it is in Jesus ;” and to testify to sinners, “the Gospel of the grace of God.” Conscious that they are not prepared to meet the critic's eye, he
submits them to those who will receive them for 6 the
Truth's sake ;” and who will unite with him in prayer
to that God, who works by the meanest instruments,
