We trust Reforms will now have wider scope than ever, and that the Kingdom of Israel, when it becomes really the Kingdom of Christ, and no longer "two nations," now known as Judah, and Ephraim (the latter synonymous with the Anglo-Saxons) may prove itself as Daniel's "little stone," "which expands into a great mountain, and fills the whole earth."

In the Lord's converse with the chief priests and elders of Judah (Matthew xxi. 42-43), while he told them that He, "the King's Son," was the "head-stone of the corner," He also told them that the kingdom of God should be taken from them, as "wicked husbandmen," and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof; the name Ephraim means fruitful, and according to Ezekiel xxxvii. two nations are to be included in the national resurrection of the "whole House of Israel." They are eventually to be "no more two nations, on the mountains of Israel, for one king shall be king to them all."

It will not then be the pride of either nation that shall triumph, "for the lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day." For the day of the Lord of Hosts (or the day of judgment) "shall be on every one that is proud and lofty and lifted up" by this grand destiny. Be it observed, that the "ships of Tarshish" are to share in the humbling with the "Cedars of Lebanon." See 2nd chapter of Isaiah, "Before the Lord and the glory of his majesty, for it shall be said, Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrils, for wherein is he to be accounted of? And then out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem."

A RED LETTER DAY IN EPPING FOREST.

By the Superintending Lady.

"MY DEAR MRS. R

"London Hospital District.

"Through the kindness of our friends, we were able to give our mothers in the month of August a treat in Epping Forest. The weather had been unsettled, and on the previous Monday the rain fell fast. We had asked the Lord to give us a fine day for our poor friends, and felt hopeful; but, alas! when Tuesday morning dawned, the sky was covered with lowering clouds, and at nine o'clock it was through a drizzling rain that I made my way to the railway station, fearing that very few of the party would have the courage to start. To my surprise, I found there were quite 200 out of the 275 who accompanied us, already waiting. I expressed my apprehension about the weather, and one bright-looking mother exclaimed, 'Oh! maʼam, don't worry yourself one bit; we shall have a glorious day.'

66

“I asked, 'What makes you think so?' and she replied,

666

Why, didn't the Bible-woman ask the Lord to give it us fine, and don't He always answer her prayers? Why, when my husband could not get work, after her prayers he got a job the next day; and when our baby seemed to be dying, Miss R. told the Lord about it, and the child began to mend at once.'

"And now the train arrived, and all were hurried to their places. One mother, forty-two years of age, had never been in a train before, and we had great difficulty in inducing her to venture. With fear and trembling she took her seat. On arriving at our destination (Buckhurst Hill), I congratulated her on being safe, and she said, 'Really, it has been delightful. Directly we started they began singing those beautiful hymns we have at the meeting, "Safe in the arms of Jesus," &c., and I forgot all about the danger. Now isn't it lovely! I never saw anything so grand in my life.' Three minutes' walk brought us to the tent, and after a short address by the Rev. W. Dilks, a hymn and prayer, we dispersed until half-past twelve assembled us for our mid-day meal, the VOL. XIV.No. 10.

mothers being delighted to find that cups of tea had been provided for drink. The meal finished, and the grace having been sung (with more heartiness than harmony), they again set forth in search of enjoyment.

"Some of the most adventurous indulged in donkey-rides, swings, &c. One I discovered, with masculine strength, throwing sticks at cocoa-nuts; she succeeded in knocking down nine, much to the chagrin of the proprietor; then, quietly taking her infant son from the friend who had held it, she walked away. As she passed me, I remarked, 'You must have practised that before?'

666

Never, in my life,' she said; but I promised my children at home that if they would be good I would bring them something; so when I saw those cocoa-nuts, I made up my mind I would have six, and I have got nine.'

"Some wandered away in search of herbs with medicinal properties; others for ferns, woodbine, and wild roses, to adorn their windows. The favourite occupation seemed to be singing; and groups of mothers collected in secluded spots to sing Sankey's hymns, and throughout the day the forest was thus made vocal. I was quietly conversing with two friends, when suddenly we heard, not far away, two voices, soprano and contralto, singing a strange air that seemed divinely sweet. Following the sound, we came upon two of our German mothers, who were singing in their mother-tongue of their heavenly Fatherland. I inquired

"What is that you have been singing so sweetly?'

"One of them replied, 'I cannot exactly tell you in English; but we are pilgrims going to heaven, and we are asking our friends to go with us.'

"A little further on two mothers were seated under a tree reading from a pocket Testament. As I came near, one of them said, 'Here's Mrs. D-, we will ask her to read it;' and so she met me with the request, 'Please, Ma'am, read what I asked-about the prodigal son and the forgiving father -which you read at the meeting a few weeks ago. Mrs. here cannot read, so she asked me.' I seated myself beside them, and, with those two listeners, held a miniature Mothers'
