Norfolk County contains 22 towns and 36,471 inhabitants, of whom 257 are negroes. Establishments for the manufacture of cotton, wool, paper, iron, &c. have sprung up within a few years in almost every town in the county, and have afforded profitable employment to great numbers of the people. The greater part of the population are, however, devoted to agriculture; and those who cultivate the lands within 10 or 12 miles of Boston, are among the best farmers in the

State. The vegetable and fruit market of the city is in a great degree supplied from this county. The towns near Boston are adorned by the country seats of many gentlemen, who have withdrawn from the business of the city to live in retirement on their ample fortunes. Their farms covered with the most luxuriant vegetation, are specimens of neatness and apparent thrift in agriculture. Horticulture has in this county received great attention. From the skilful and scientific horticulturists of Norfolk, has proceeded a taste for the science, which is fast diffusing itself through all other parts of the State.

Norfolk County was incorporated in 1793, and sends three Senators to the Legislature. Rivers. Charles River, which has been fully described in Middlesex, flows through the west and north part of this county, and forms the boundary line between it and Middlesex for several miles of its course. The valuable water privileges of this river and its tributaries, have been very generally appropriated to mills of various kinds and factories. Manufacturing establishments are found in almost every town through which they pass.

Mother Brook flows out of Charles River in Dedham, in the account of which a description of it has been given, and after a course of three and one half miles, falls into Neponset River. Five dams have been constructed upon it in its short course to create water power for various manufacturing purposes.

Neponset River has its sources in Foxborough and Stoughton. It takes in general a northeasterly direction, presenting in its course important water privileges, which have been extensively occupied. It meets the tide at Milton four miles from its mouth and falls into Boston harbor.

Stop River rises in a large pond in Wrentham, and flowing north falls into Charles River in Medfield.

Railroads. The railroad described in the account of Quincy, was the first constructed in the country, and has been considerably used for the transportation of granite.

in length; and a large portion of it will lie within Norfolk County, passing through it in a southwesterly direction. The estimated expense is $8,000 per mile or $350,000 for the whole route.

Mountains. Though much of the surface of Norfolk County is broken and uneven, it contains no considerable mountains. The ridges called the Blue Hills are the most noted elevations in the county. The soil is not generally of the first quality in the southern and eastern parts of the county, and that nearer the city has been brought to its high degree of cultivation by the generous reward afforded in a good market for every agricultural product.

Its butchers and market men have been some of the most enterprising in the county, and have dealt in the markets of towns remote as well as near. Bridgewater. The ancient town of Bridgewater was purchased of the savages by Miles Standish and others, and formed then a part of Duxbury. It embraced at its separation from that town, the four townships, which now bear the same name, and constitute the northwest part of Plymouth County. The town before its division contained 5670 inhabitants. The south parish, which now retains the old name of Bridgewater, contains probably about 2000.
