in a northeasterly direction towards the sea; and when it has nearly reached it, turns to the south and runs parallel to the shore, nearly three miles before it discharges its waters into the ocean. Its mouth shifts for half a mile from north to south, and sometimes has one outlet, sometimes two. A great many ships have been built on this stream, particularly in Scituate.

Taunton River has several sources in Plymouth County, one in Carver, another in Abington, and many others. It is called Titicut till it has received a small stream which issues from Assawampset Pond in Middleborough. A farther account of this river will be found in the description of Bristol County.

Weweantic River rises in Carver. It receives the name of river on the southwest borders of Wareham, where it is about three rods wide. It flows in a southerly course in a crooked and rocky channel and empties into Buzzard's Bay. Small vessels can enter it nearly a mile. Alewives ascend the stream to two ponds in Carver, but not, it is said, in such numbers as formerly.

neck leading to Roxbury, yet for all practical purposes it is no longer a peninsula. A mill dam one mile and a half in length, the neck, and six long and expensive bridges extending to Brookline, Roxbury, Charlestown, Cambridge, and South Boston, afford ample means of ready communication with all the surrounding country. The harbor, which receives the waters of the Mystic, Charles, and Neponset Rivers, spreads out before the city 75 square miles in extent, scarcely admitting more than two ships abreast, yet capacious enough to contain over five hundred. Convenient, and deep enough for the largest vessels, secured from an enemy by forts on the islands at its mouth, and from being nearly surrounded by land safe from every wind, it is one of the best harbors in the world. Wharves have been built out upon the shore nearly all around the city, and are the scenes of an immense commercial business. Some of them are about one third of a mile in length, and are always crowded with vessels, alive with the lading and unlading of cargoes, and bordered by large blocks of buildings used for the storage of goods and for the counting rooms of the merchants. To the Boston district, including the ports of Boston and Charlestown, belong about 150,000 tons of shipping, a much greater

amount than any other in the United States possesses, except New-York. Goods were imported from 1821 to 1825, to the average value of nearly fourteen millions of dollars annually, and two thirds of that sum were exported. From the Boston stores filled with articles of foreign commerce and domestic industry, supplies to a vast amount are purchased and transported to the adjacent and back country of Massachusetts, to Vermont, New-Hampshire, and the State of Maine. The free and daring enterprise of her merchants, sending their vessels to trade with almost all nations of the world, civilized and uncivilized, has chiefly placed Boston in a rank with the first cities in our country in population, wealth and distinction.

Within a few years, commerce having become less flourishing and profitable, a considerable portion of the immense capital of Boston, has been withdrawn from navigation and invested in manufactures. The miraculous influence of the treasures of her capitalists, has created factories and gathered busy villages round the numerous water-falls of the interior, Boston district? What amount of goods were imported and exported annually from 1821 to 1825? What is the domestic trade of Boston? What is said of the enterprise of its merchants?

What change has within a few years taken place in the business of Boston ? What has been the influence of the wealth of its capitalists? What is the present condition

both in and out of the State; at Waltham, Springfield, Somersworth, Dover and Lowell, and many places beside. This branch of business is now, however, much depressed, and great embarrassment and heavy losses have thereby been produced. Much property is also invested in distilleries, glass factories, type and iron founderies, and in the numerous operations of mechanical industry. The mill dam constructed from the city to Brookline, and a side dam to Roxbury, forming a full and an empty basin, secure by their gates the tide waters of Charles River. Grist mills, and very extensive rope walks and nail works have been built upon the branch dam, and the water power is sufficient to set in motion one hnndred mills and factories. Insurance business is transacted to a great extent upon risks of loss by fire and at sea. The capital of the 18 offices in the city, amounts to five and a half millions of dollars. The banks are 18 in number, with an aggregate stock of nearly fifteen millions; and amidst all the fluctuations of business, they have always promptly redeemed their bills, and sustained their credit unimpair
