jail, a bank, a printing office, from which is issued a weekly newspaper, an academy, and two cotton factories. Iron has long been manufactured in this place. Population 4220.

Troy is an extensive manufacturing town. Fall River village, which forms a part of it, contains 14 factories, built, some of them of brick, and some of stone; and in 1828 it had more than 2000 inhabitants. The stream moving the machinery falls 140 feet in eighty rods. Troy has also a printing office, a weekly newspaper, and a bank. The population of the whole town in 1820 was only 1594.

Westport has a population of 2633. It is a good agricultural town, and sends large quantities of its produce to the New-Bedford market. Quakers form the principal religious

Rivers. Taunton River rises in Abington and Carver, in Plymouth County, and passes south-west across Bristol County into Narraganset Bay. It is an important stream, much the largest in the county, and is navigable for sinall vessels 20 miles to Taunton.

Canoe and Rumford Rivers, emptying into Taunton River, and a branch of the Pawtucket afford valuable mill privileges, which are extensively occupied.

Mountains, there are none. The county is generally level and sandy. Iron ore is found in large quantities in different parts of the county.

Chilmark contains the settlement of Gay Head Indians, of whom there are 250, owning 2400 acres of land.

Edgartown is the shire town of the county. Its fine harbour is much resorted to, as a place of refuge in dangerous weather, by vessels on the coast. There are in this town 1374 inhabitants, exclusive of Indians, of whom there are more than 100.

Tisbury has a large and safe harbour, called Holmes' Hole; and vessels bound into Massachusetts Bay frequently put in there to wait for a wind to carry them round Cape Cod. There are 1223 inhabitants besides a small number of Indians.

The general sterility of their land and their favourable situation for fishing induce the inhabitants to seek their chief subsistence from the sea. The Indians, between 4 and 500 in number, have five different settlements in the county, and possess 3,150 acres of land. These miserable remnants of the original inhabitants of the country, are under the general care of the Legislature of Massachusetts. They possess all their lands in common, and are not permitted by the government to dispose of them to the neighbouring inhabitants. Though under the general superintendence of the State, their private and peculiar interests are left to their own management. They make their laws in public meetings, in which the singular custom prevails of allowing the women to take a part and to have the same right of voting as the men. A missionary gen

Mountains. The Island of Martha's Vineyard, which constitutes almost the whole of Dukes County, has no high elevations, though the land rises in the western part of it.

To Dukes County belong the Elizabeth Islands, which extend eighteen miles along the southern limit of Buzzard's Bay, 16 in number, and several of them inhabited.
