Dennis has for a long time been noted for the manufacture of salt from sea water. Scargo Hill in this town is the highest land in the county. Population 1997.

Falmouth contains a bank, and has a population of 2370. There are in the township numerous ponds, some of fresh and some of salt water. These give great variety to the scenery of the place.

A canal across Cape Cod, to unite Buzzard's and Barnstable Bays, is in contemplation, and if completed will pass through this town. Salt is manufactured here in great quantities. There is also a glass manufactory. There were once Indian settlements in this town, and the Herring Pond tribe now live on its borders. Sandwich has an academy and a population of 2884.

Yarmouth, one of the largest towns in the county, manufactures great quantities of salt. Sea water is raised into vats by pumps worked by the wind. The water passes through four vats exposed to the sun, gradually drying away, till in the last it becomes salt. Moveable roofs protect the vats from the rain and dews. Yarmouth contains a bank and 2232 inhabitants.

GENERALIZATION.

Inhabitants, &c. There are thirteen towns in the county of Barnstable, and 24,281 inhabitants, of whom 181 are negroes. Besides these there are about 300 Indians in the southwest part of the county, at Mashpee, who own 10,000 acres of land. This place is not an incorporated town, but its inhabitants, chiefly Indians, are under the general direction of the State government.

The inhabitants of Barnstable county are almost all employed in commerce and the fisheries, though some are employed in agriculture, and salt is extensively manufactured. The county was incorporated in 1685, and, at present, sends one senator to the General Court. Rivers. There are several small streams, but none of much importance.

passage under a part of the rock, leaving a natural bridge 20 feet high; and directly over that is another natural bridge of stone, 62 feet above the water, 12 or 15 feet long, and 10 feet wide. The town possesses extensive water power, and is a flourishing manufacturing place, particularly the village of North Adams. There are 16 factories, cotton and woollen. The population in 1820, was 1836; now (1829) it is estimated at 3000.

Cheshire is a fine grazing town and has a population of 1202. The Cheshire and Boston Glass Companies, with a capital each of $200,000, have their works in this place.

Great Barrington is well situated on both sides of the Housatonic River, but is chiefly built on the western bank. It has a soil of the best quality and a beautiful surface. Population 1908.
