Hampshire County, incorporated in 1662, embraced at that time the three counties in this State bordering on Connecticut River. Before its division Hampshire was the largest county in Massachusetts, and had Northampton for its shire town. When the population of the county had extended to its extreme parts, and had increased so as to render it inconvenient for the courts to perform their duties at one place, it was divided by the legislature of 1811 and 12, into the three present counties. Hampshire County still having Northampton for its shire town, now sends two Senators to the Legislature.

Ware River rises chiefly in Philipston and Hubbardston, and pursuing a southwesterly course, receives Swift River and empties into the Chickopee in Palmer, Hampden County.

Westfield River. The main branch of Westfield River, with several small tributaries to it, waters the western part of the county.

The streams of this county, except the Connecticut, though they are numerous and abundantly water its lands, are inconsiderable in size compared with those of the counties above and below it on the river.

The surface of Hampshire County is generally hilly and in some parts mountainous, though there are level intervals on the banks of the Connecticut. The soil is of very unequal quality being best in the centre, and growing less and less fertile towards the eastern and western extremities.
