GENERALIZATION.

Inhabitants, &c. Berkshire County contains 33 towns; in 1820 there were but 31, with an aggregate population of 35,720, of whom 836 were blacks. The county was incorporated in 1761, and sends two Senators to the Legislature. The people are chiefly engaged in agriculture, and find good markets for their surplus produce in the flourishing cities on the Hudson River, in the state of NewYork. The iron mines of the county are exhaustless, and are already productive to a considerable extent. They only wait for increased facilities of transportation to engage the attention of enterprising capitalists, and afford profitable employment for the industry of the people. Rivers. The Hoosac River rises, its north branch in Stamford, Vermont; its south in Lanesborough of this county. These two branches meet in the village of North Adams. The Hoosac receives Green River at Williamstown, crosses a corner of Vermont, passes into the State of New-York, and empties into Hudson River. It affords valuable water power, and is bordered by fertile banks.

The Housatonic has the sources of its two head branches, one in New-Ashford, and the other in Windsor, in this county. These streams meet in Pittsfield, where the river takes a southerly course through the county into the State of Connecticut; and seven miles from the line it rushes over a fall of 60 feet, between Salisbury and Canaan. These are the most considerable falls in New-England. The river then passes through the western part of the State of Connecticut, and after receiving several tributary streams changes its direction
