2 Through Him my heart, undaunted, dares
With mighty hosts to cope;

Through Him, in doubtful straits of war,
For good success I hope.

3 Henceforth within His house to dwell
I earnestly desire,

His wondrous beauty there to view,
And of His will inquire.

4 For there may I with comfort rest,
In times of deep distress;

And safe, as on a rock, abide

In that secure recess.

5 God's time with patient faith expect,
Who will inspire thy breast

With inward strength; do thou thy part,
And leave to Him the rest.

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust. Ps. xci. 2.

O God, my Life!

In mercy

shine on me,

Whose hope is all in Thee:
O God, my Life!

My Father most benign,

Who bid'st me call Thee mine,—
What need I, Thee my God possessing,
Enfolded in Thy perfect blessing?
O Good Supreme! O Good Supreme!
O God, my Life!

If but Thy love be near,
I conquer all my fear.

O God, my Life!

I would not aught refuse

Which Thou for me dost choose:

3

Affliction's cup of Thee receiving,
Nor in distrustful sorrow grieving.
Thy will be done. Thy will be done.
O God, my Life!

Shield Thou my trembling head,
Till all these clouds are fled:
O God, my Life!

Then may I rest in Thee,
God of eternity;

Meanwhile my faith on Thee dependeth,
O Christ, my heart to Thee ascendeth,-
My Lord, my Life! My Lord, my Life!

PSALM XXXi.

1 In Thee, O Lord, I trust;

Defend my truth from shame;
Redeem me with Thy love and power,
For Thy most righteous Name.

2 Bow down Thy gracious ear,
And speedy succour send:
Be Thou my rock and fortress-tower,
To shelter and defend.

3 Thou art my fort and rock,

My strength in danger tried :
Thou, for Thy great and glorious Name,
My steps wilt ever guide.

4 O draw me from the snare

Which foes have closely laid;

Thou art my might and fortitude,
My only hope and aid.

5 To Thy protecting hand

My spirit I resign;

Thou hast redeem'd me, Lord of Truth,
And I am wholly Thine.

PSALM CXXXix.

1 Thou, Lord, by strictest search hast known
My rising up and lying down;

My secret thoughts are known to Thee,
Known long before conceived by me.

2 Thine eye my bed and path surveys,
My public haunts and private ways;
Thou know'st what 'tis my lips would vent,
My yet unutter'd words' intent.

3 Surrounded by Thy pow'r I stand,
On ev'ry side I find Thy hand:
O skill, for human reach too high!
Too dazzling bright for mortal eye!
4 O could I so perfidious be,

To think of once deserting Thee,
Where, Lord, could I Thy Spirit shun?
Or whither from Thy presence run?

5 Search, try, O God, my thoughts and heart, If mischief lurks in any part;

Correct me where I go astray,

And guide me in Thy perfect way.

My heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Ps.

lxxxiv. 2.

1 Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer to Thee!

E'en though it be a cross
That raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,-
Nearer to Thee!

2 Though, like a wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me,
My rest a stone:

Yet in my dreams I'd be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,-
Nearer to Thee!

3 There let my way appear
Steps unto heaven;

All that Thou sendest me
In mercy given;

Angels to beckon me

Nearer, my God, to Thee,—
Nearer to Thee!

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stay'd on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee. ISA. xxvi. 3.

1 Thou boundless Source of every good,
Our best desires fulfil;

And help us to adore Thy grace,
And mark Thy sovereign will.

2 In all Thy mercies may our souls
Thy bounteous goodness see;
Nor let the gifts Thy grace imparts
Estrange our hearts from Thee.

3 Teach us in time of deep distress,
To own Thy hand, O God,
And in submissive silence learn
The lessons of Thy rod.

4 In every changing scene of life,
Whate'er that scene may be,

Give us a meek and humble mind,
A mind at peace with Thee.

5 Then may we close our eyes in death,
Free from distracting care;

For death is life, and labour rest,
If Thou art with us there.

There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ACTS iv. 12.

1 Jesus, Lord, we kneel before Thee,
Bend from heaven Thy gracious ear;
While our waiting souls adore Thee,
Friend of helpless sinners, hear!
By Thy mercy,

O deliver us, good Lord!

2 Taught by Thine unerring Spirit,
Boldly we draw nigh to God;
Only in Thy spotless merit,

Only through Thy precious blood:
By Thy mercy,

O deliver us, good Lord!

3 From the depth of nature's blindness,
From the hardening power of sin,
From all malice and unkindness,
From the pride that lurks within,
By Thy mercy,

O deliver us, good Lord!

4 When temptation sorely presses,
In the day of Satan's power,
In our times of deep distresses,
In each dark and trying hour,
By Thy mercy,

O deliver us, good Lord!

5 In the solemn hour of dying, In the awful judgment day,
