May our souls, on Thee relying,
Find Thee still our hope and stay:
By Thy mercy,

O deliver us, good Lord!

PSALM CXXXi.

1 Lord, my heart is with the lowly,
I do seek

With the meek,

Humble thoughts and lowly. 2 Let me not by vain aspiring Strive to rise,

But be wise,

Safer truth desiring.

3 Pride that soars must fall in sadness:
Lowliness

God doth bless

With an infant's gladness;

4 When it lies all weak from weaning,
Yet at rest,

On the breast

In its gladness leaning.

5 Nought my trust from God shall sever:
Israel, thou

142

Pay this vow

To thy King for ever.

That was the true light, that lighteth every man that cometh

into the world. JOHN i. 9.

1 O Jesu, Lord of heavenly grace,

Thou Brightness of the Father's face,
Thou Fountain of eternal light,

Whose beams disperse the shades of night;

Come, holy Sun of heavenly love,
Come in Thy radiance from above,
And to our inward hearts convey
Thy Holy Spirit's cloudless ray.
2 May He our actions deign to bless,
And loose the bonds of wickedness;
From sudden falls our feet defend,
And guide us safely to the end.
May faith, deep-rooted in the soul,
Subdue our flesh, our minds control;
May guile depart and discord cease,
And all within be joy and peace.
3 O hallow'd then be every day;
Let meekness be our morning ray,
And faithful love our noon-day light,
And hope our sunset, calm and bright.
O Christ! as with returning morn
Thine image to our eyes is borne:
So may we ever clearly see

Our Saviour and our God in Thee.

That every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. PHIL. ii. 11.

1 Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise:
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace.

JESUS, the Name that calms our fears,

That bids our sorrows cease,
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life, and health, and peace.

2 He breaks the power of death and sin,
And sets the captive free:

His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood avail'd for me.

He speaks, and at His mighty voice
New life the dead receive:
The broken hearts again rejoice,

And in His Name believe.

3 Hear Him, ye deaf,-His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosen'd tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Saviour come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy!
Lord of our life! all-gracious God!
Thy goodness we'll proclaim;
Declare Thy wondrous acts abroad,
And ever bless Thy Name.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace. ÏSA. lii. 7.

1 How beauteous are their feet
Who stand on Zion's hill;

Who bring salvation on their tongues,
And words of peace reveal!

2 How welcome is their voice!

How good the news they bring,

"Jerusalem, behold thy God,

Thy Saviour and thy King."

3 How happy are our ears,

That hear this joyful sound,
Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found!

4 How blessed are our eyes,

That see this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings desired it long,
But died without the sight.

5 The Lord makes bare His arm,
Through all the earth abroad:
Let every nation now behold
Its Saviour and its God.

PSALM iii.

1 O Lord, Thou art my sure defence;
On Thee my hopes rely;
Thou art my glory, and shalt yet
Lift up my head on high.

2 Since whensoever in distress
To God I made my prayer,
He heard me from His holy hill,
Why should I now despair?

3 Guarded by Him, I laid me down
My sweet repose to take;
For I through Him securely sleep,
Through Him in safety wake.
4 Salvation to the Lord belongs,
He only can defend;

146

His blessing He extends to all
That on His power depend.

Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.

EPH. iii. 15.

1 The saints on earth, and those above,

But one communion make;
Join'd to the Lord in bonds of love,

And of His grace partake.

2 One family, we dwell in Him,
One Church above, beneath,

Though now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream of death.

3 One army of the living God,
To His command we bow;

Part of the host have cross'd the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 O Lord, be Thou our constant guide!
Then, when the word is given,

147

Bid death's cold flood its waves divide,
And land us safe in heaven.

PSALM lvii.

1 O God, my heart is fix'd, 'tis bent,
Its thankful tribute to present;
And with my heart my voice I'll raise
To Thee, my God, in songs of praise.
2 Awake, my glory: harp and lute,
No longer let your strings be mute;
And I, my tuneful part to take,
Will with the early dawn awake.
3 Thy praises, Lord, I will resound
To all the list'ning nations round:
Thy mercy highest heav'n transcends,
Thy truth beyond the clouds extends.
4 Be Thou, O God, exalted high;
And, as Thy glory fills the sky,
So let it be on earth display'd,
Till Thou art here, as there, obey'd.

148

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life. 1 TIM.

vi. 12.

1 Go forward in your course,

Ye soldiers of the cross,

Beneath this banner ye

Need fear no harm nor loss.
