LVI.

EFRAIN not to speak, when there is occasion to do good, and hide not thy wisdom in her beauty.

For by speech wisdom shall be known: and learning by the word of the tongue. In no wise speak against the truth; but be abashed of the error of thine ignorance.

LVII.

[Ecclus. iv. 23-25.]

GO not after thy lusts, but refrain thyself from thine appetites.

If thou givest thy soul the desires that please her, she will make thee a laughingstock to thine enemies that malign thee.

Take not pleasure in much good cheer, neither be tied to the expence thereof.

Be not an hypocrite in the sight of men, and take good heed what thou speakest.

[Ecclus. i. 28, 29.]

LX.

FORSAKE not an old friend; for the new

is not comparable to him: a new friend is as new wine; when it is old, thou shalt drink it with pleasure.

LXI.

[Ecclus. ix. 10.]

REHEARSE not unto another that which

is told unto thee, and thou shalt fare never the worse.

LXII.

[Ecclus. xix. 7.]

GIVE ear, receive my advice, and refuse

not my

counsel.

And put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chain.

Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bonds.

Come unto her with thy whole heart, and keep her ways with all thy power.

Search, and seek, and she shall be made known unto thee: and when thou hast got hold of her, let her not go.

For at the last thou shalt find her rest, and that shall be turned to thy joy.

LXIII.

[Ecclus. vi. 23-28.]

LET us search and try our ways, and turn

again to the LORD.

Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

[Lamentations iii. 40, 41.]

[Ecclus. xxi. 13.]

BE not unsatiable in any dainty thing, nor too greedy upon meats:

For excess of meats bringeth sickness.

LXVI.

[Ecclus. xxxvii. 29, 30.]

STRIVE for the truth unto death, and the Lord shall fight for thee.

Be not hasty in thy tongue, and in thy deeds slack and remiss.

Be not as a lion in thy house, nor frantic among thy servants.

Let not thine hand be stretched out to receive, and shut when thou shouldest [Ecclus. iv. 28-31.]

LXVII.

EAT, as it becometh a man, those things

which are set before thee; and devour not, lest thou be hated.

Leave off first for manners' sake; and be not unsatiable, lest thou offend.

When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all.

A

very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured, and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed.

[Ecclus. xxxi. 16—20.]

LXVIII.

GIVE not thy son and wife, thy brother and friend power over thee while thou livest, and give not thy goods to another: lest it repent thee, and thou intreat for the same again.

As long as thou livest and hast breath in thee, give not thyself over to any.

For better it is that thy children should seek to thee, than that thou shouldest stand to their courtesy.

In all thy works keep to thyself the preeminence; leave not a stain in thine

honour.

[Ecclus. xxxiii. 19—23.]

LXIX.

BIND not one sin upon another; for in one thou shalt not be unpunished.

LXX.

[Ecclus. vii. 8.]

REST in the LORD, and wait patiently for

him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit

the earth.

[Psalm xxxvii. 7-9.]

LXXI.

RUST not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them. God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God. Also unto thee, O LORD, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man cording to his work.
