In sufferings keen and long
By chastening mercy sent.
I never did a right

Without a sweet reward

Of inward music and celestial light,

In beautiful accord.

I never scorned but with result of scorn,

Nor loved without new life when I was most forlorn.

RICHES.

If riches increase, set not your heart on them. Psalm lxii. 10.

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall. Proverbs xi. 28.

The blessing of the Lord maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivers from death.

Riches are a crown to the wise; but the promotion of fools is folly.

If riches increase, they are increased that use them. If the gatherer gathers too much, nature takes out of the man what she put into his chest; swells the estate, but kills the owner.

Where gold avails, argument fails.

SACRIFICE.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Psalm li. 17.

Lo! I come to do thy will, O God. Hebrews x. 7.

O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me ; not as I will but as thou wilt. Matt. xxvi. 39.

nevertheless,

If any one would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me; for whosoever desireth to save his life will lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same will save it. Luke ix. 23.

Wherever a great soul has sought to reform and bless our race, there is a Calvary.

Toussaint the most unhappy man of men!

Whether the whistling rustic tend his plough
Within thy hearing, or thy head be now
Pillowed in some deep dungeon's earless den.
O miserable chieftain! where and when

Wilt thou find patience? Yet die not; do thou
Wear rather in thy bonds a cheerful brow;
Though fallen thyself, never to rise again.

Live and take comfort. Thou hast left behind

Powers that will work for thee; air, earth and skies;
There's not a breathing of the common wind

That will forget thee; thou hast great allies;
Thy friends are exultations, agonies
And love, and man's unconquerable mind.

Eternal spirit of the chainless mind!

Brightest in dungeons, Liberty! thou art;
For there thy habitation is the heart-
The heart which love of thee alone can bind.

And when thy sons to fetters are confined,

To fetters, and the damp vault's dayless gloom,
Their country conquers with their martyrdom,
And Freedom's fame finds wings on every wind.
Chillon thy prison is a holy place,

And thy sad floor an altar-for 'twas trod,
Until his very steps have left a trace,
Worn, as if thy cold pavement were a sod,
By Bonnivard! May none those marks efface
For they appeal from tyranny to God!

SECRETS.

I (Christ) spoke openly; in secret have I said nothing. John xviii. 20.

Pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will reward thee openly. Matthew vi. 6.

A talebearer revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. Proverbs xi. 13.

He who tells his own secret will not keep yours.

The heart knows its own bitterness, and no stranger intermeddles with its joy.

SELF-CONTROUL.

He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city. Proverbs xvii. 32.

Refrain to-night,

And that shall lend a kind of easiness

To the next abstinence; the next more easy;
For use almost can change the stamp of nature,
And either curb the devil or throw him out
With wond'rous potency.

SERVICE.

Let us follow after the things which make for peace, and things whereby one may edify another. Romans xiv. 19.

We that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Romans xv. 1.

I Mistress and you Miss-who is to sweep the house.

Serve yourself if you wish to be well served.

He is of no use to himself who is of no use to others.

A good mistress makes good servants.

God serves all; therefore let each serve each.

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS AND DUTIES.

The body is not one member, but many. If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole body were hearing, where were the smelling? And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee ; nor the head to the feet, I have no need of you. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. 1 Cor. xii. 14, &c.

If the Past has lent thee Wisdom, pay it to Futurity.

Break onel nk, you break the chain.

Love all; trust a few:

Do wrong to none; be able for thine enemy
Rather in power than use; and keep thy friend
Under thy own lip's key; be checked for silence,
But never taxed for speech.

SOWING AND REAPING.

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. Psalm cxxvi. 5.

They that sow wickedness, reap the same.

Job iv. 8.

In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand. Eccl. xi. 6.

Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. Gal. 7.

Sow with a generous hand;

Pause not for toil or pain;

Weary not through the heat of summer,

Weary not through the cold spring rain;

But wait till the autumn comes

For the sheaves of golden grain.
