1 Or,

my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they
shall declare my glory among the nations. And 20
they shall bring all your brethren out of all the
nations for an offering unto the LORD, upon
horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon
mules, and upon 'swift beasts, to my holy mount-
ain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children
of Israel bring their offering in a clean vessel
into the house of the LORD. And of them also 21
will I take for priests and for Levites, saith the
LORD. For as the new heavens and the new 22
earth, which I will make, shall remain before
me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and
your name remain. And it shall come to pass, 23
that from one new moon to another, and from
one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come
to worship before me, saith the LORD.
they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases
of the men that have transgressed against me:
for their worm shall not die, neither shall their
fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhor-
ring unto all flesh.

THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET

JEREMIAH.

1 I

THE words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the 2 land of Benjamin: to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of 3 his reign. It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah; unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

Now the word of the LORD came unto me, 5 saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee; I have appointed 6 thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for 7 I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for 'to whomsoever I 1Or, on whatshall send thee thou shalt go, and whatsoever soever errand 8 I shall command thee thou shalt speak. Be

not afraid because of them: for I am with thee 9 to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; and the LORD said unto me, Behold, 10 I have put my words in thy mouth: see, I have this day set thee over the nations and

over the kingdoms, to pluck up and to break
down, and to destroy and to overthrow; to
build, and to plant.

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto 11 me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I 1 Heb. shaked. said, I see a rod of 'an almond tree. Then said 12 the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for * Heb. shoked. I watch over my word to perform it. And the 13

word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething caldron; and the face thereof is from the north. Then the LORD said unto me, 14. Out of the north evil 'shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. For, lo, I will call 15 all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of 4 Or, speak Judah. And I will 'utter my judgements against 16 with them of them touching all their wickedness; in that they my judgements have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. Thou therefore gird up 17 thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at them, lest I dismay thee before them. For, 18 behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. And they shall fight against thee; but they 19 shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.

And the word of the LORD came to me, I 2 saying, Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, 2 saying, Thus saith the LORD, I remember

'for thee the kindness of thy youth, the love Or,
of thine espousals; how thou wentest after me
in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
Israel was holiness unto the LORD, the first-
fruits of his increase: all that devour him shall
be held guilty; evil shall come upon them, saith
the LORD.

Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of 5 Israel: thus saith the LORD, What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after 6 vanity, and are become vain? Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt; that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the Or, deep shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man dwelt? 7 And I brought you into a plentiful land, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and 8 made mine heritage an abomination. The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the rulers Heb. shepherds. also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things 9 that do not profit. Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your 10 children's children will I plead. For pass over to the isles of Kittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently; and see II if there hath been such a thing. Hath a nation changed their gods, which yet are no gods? but my people have changed their 12 glory for that which doth not profit. Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.

2 Or, fed on

For my people have committed two evils; 13
they have forsaken me the fountain of living
waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken
cisterns, that can hold no water.
Is Israel 14

a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he become a prey? The young lions have roared 15 upon him, and 'yelled: and they have made his land waste; his cities are burned up, without inhabitant. The children also of Noph and Tah- 16 panhes have broken the crown of thy head. Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in 17 that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? And now 18 what hast thou to do in the way to Egypt, to 3 That is, the drink the waters of Shihor? or what hast thou to do in the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River? Thine own wickedness shall 19 correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove

thee know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts. For of 20 Or, thou hast old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not serve; for upon every high hill and under every green tree thou didst bow thyself, playing the harlot. Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly 21 a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? For though thou wash thee with lye, 22 and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD. How canst thou say, I am not defiled, I 23 have not gone after the Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift 'dromedary traversing her ways; a 24 wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind in her desire; in her occasion who
