PARAPHRASE

ΟΝ ΤΗ Ε

CXLVIIIth PSALM, by the Earl of Rofcommon; exhorting to praise the ALMIGHTY, and All-wife CREATOR of the UNIVERSE.

Azure Vaults! O Chrystal Sky!
The World's transparent Canopy,

Break your long Silence, and let Mortals know
With what Contempt you look on Things below.

Wing'd Squadrons of the God of War,
Who conquer wherefoe'er you are,

Let ecchoing Anthems make his Praises known,
On Earth bis Foot-flool, as in Heav'n bis Throne.

Great Eye of all, whofe glorious Ray
Rules the bright Empire of the Day,
O praife bis Name, without whofe purer Light
Thou hadst been bid in an Abyss of Night.

[merged small][ocr errors]

Ye Moon and Planets, who difpenfe
By God's Command your Influence,
Refign to him, as your Creator, due,
Thai Veneration which Men pay to you.

Faireft as well as first of Things,
From whom all Joy, all Beauty Springs,
O praise th' Almighty Ruler of the Globe,
Who ufeth Thee for his imperial Robe.

Praife bim ye loud harmonious Spheres,
Whofe facred Stamp all Nature bears,
Who did all Forms from the rude Chaos draw,
And whofe Command is th' univerfal Law."

Te watry Mountains of the Sky,
And you fo far above our Eye,

Vaft ever-moving Orbs, exalt his Name,
Who gave its Being to your glorious Frame.

Ye Dragons, whofe contagious Breath

Peoples the dark Retreats of Death,
Change your fierce Hiffing into joyful Song,
And praife your Maker with your forked Tongue,

Praife him ye Monsters of the Deep,
That in the Sea's vaft Bofom fleep,
At Robofe Command the foaming Billows roar,
Yet know their Limits, tremble and adore.

Ye Mifts and Vapours, Hail and Snow,
And you, who thro' the Concave blow,

Swift Executors of his holy Word,

24

Whirlwinds and Tempests, praise the Almighty Lord.

Mountains, who, to your Maker's View,
Seem less than Mole-bills do to you,
Remember how, when first Jehovah Spoke,
All Heav'n was Fire, and Sinai bid in Smoke.

Praise him fweet Offspring of the Ground,
With beanly Nectar yearly crown'd,
tall Gedars celebrate his Praise,
That in his Temples facred Altars raise.

And ye

Idle Muficians of the Spring,

Whofe only Care's to love and fing,

Fly thro' the World, and let your trembling Throat
Praife your Creator, with the sweetest Note.

Praife him ye Jalvage, furious Beast,
That on his Stores do daily feaft,

And you tame Slaves of the laborious Plow,

Your weary

Knees to your

Creator bow.

Majestick Monarchs, Mortal Gods,
Whole Pow'r bath bere no Periods,
May all Attempts against your Crown be vain,
But ftill remember by whofe Pow'r you reign.

Let the wide World his Praifes fing,
Where Tagus and Euphrates Spring,
And from the Danube's frofty Banks to those,
Where, from an unknown Head, great Nilus flows.

You that difpofe of all our Lives,

Praise him from whom your Pow'r derives, Be true and just like him, and fear his Word,

As much as Malefactors do

your

Sword.

[blocks in formation]

Praise him Old Monuments of Time, O praise him in your youthful Prime; Praife bim fair Idols of our greedy Senfe, Exalt bis Name, fweet Age of Innocence.

Jehovah's Name shall only laft,

When Heaven, Earth, and all is past:
Nothing, Great God, is to be found in thee
But unconceivable Eternity.

Exalt, O Albion's favour'd Race,
The God of Gods, the God of Grace,
Who will above the Stars your Empire raife,
And with his Glory recompenfe your Praife.
