ISAIAH 11:1-9

AND there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse,

And a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit:

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,

The spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes,

Neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor,

And reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:

And he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth,

And with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

And the leopard shall lie down with the kid;

And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;

And a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed: their young ones shall lie down together:

And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp,

And the weaned child shall put his hand on the basilisk's den.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain:

For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

EVENING WORSHIP

ISAIAH 35: 1-10

THE wilderness and the solitary

BEHOLD, a king shall reign in place shall be glad; righteousness,

And princes shall rule in justice.

And the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

It shall blossom abundantly, and

And a man shall be as an hiding rejoice even with joy and singing;

place from the wind,

And a covert from the tempest; As rivers of water in a dry place, As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim,

And the ears of them that hear shall hearken.

The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge,

And the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. Then justice shall dwell in the wilderness,

And righteousness shall abide in the fruitful field.

And the work of righteousness shall be peace;

And the effect of righteousness quietness and confidence for ever. And my people shall abide in a peaceable habitation,

And in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.

The glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it,

The excellency of Carmel and Sharon:

They shall see the glory of the Lord, the excellency of our God. Strengthen ye the weak hands, And confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not;

Behold your God will come with vengeance, with the recompence of God; he will come and save you.

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing;

For in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

And the glowing sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water:

In the habitation of jackals,

where they lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

And an high way shall be there,

and a way,

The voice of one that crieth, Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of the LORD.

The unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for the redeemed: The wayfaring men, yea fools, shall not err therein.

No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast go up thereon, They shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: And the ransomed of the LORD shall return,

And come with singing unto Zion;

And everlasting joy shall be upon their heads:

They shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

IN ADVENT

MORNING WORSHIP

ISAIAH 40: 1-11; 27-31

Every valley shall be exalted, And every mountain and hill shall be made low:

And the crooked shall be made straight,

And the rough places plain:

And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together:

For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

The voice of one saying, Cry.
And one said, What shall I cry?
All flesh is grass,

And all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the breath of the Lord bloweth upon it:

Surely the people is grass.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth:

But the word of our God shall stand for ever.

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high

COMFORT ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusa- mountain; lem,

And cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned;

That she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength;

Lift it up, be not afraid;

Say unto the cities of Judah, Behold, your God!

Behold, the LORD God will come as a mighty one, and his arm shall rule for him:

Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompence before him.

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd,

He shall gather the lambs in his

arm,

And carry them in his bosom,

And shall gently lead those that have their young.

Why sayest thou, O Jacob,
And speakest, O Israel,
My way is hid from the LORD,

And the justice due to me is passed away from my God?

Hast thou not known?

Hast thou not heard?

The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary;

There is no searching of his understanding.

He giveth power to the faint; And to him that hath no might he increaseth strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary,

And the young men shall utterly fall:

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength;

They shall mount up with wings as eagles;

They shall run and not be weary;
They shall walk and not faint.

SUITABLE FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

EVENING WORSHIP

ISAIAH 42:1-16

BEHOLD my Servant, whom I uphold;

My chosen, in whom my soul delighteth:

I have put my spirit upon him; He shall bring forth justice to the Gentiles.

He shall not cry, nor lift up his voice,

Nor cause it to be heard in the street.

A bruised reed shall he not break, And the smoking flax shall he not quench:

He shall bring forth justice in truth.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged till he have set justice in the earth; and the isles shall wait for his law.

Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them forth;

He that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it;

He that giveth breath unto the people upon it,

And spirit to them that walk therein:

I the LORD have called thee in righteousness,

And will hold thine hand, and will keep thee,

And give thee for a covenant of the people,

For a light of the Gentiles;

To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,

And them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

I am the LORD; that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another,

Neither my praise unto graven images.

Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare:

Before they spring forth I tell you of them.

Sing unto the LORD a new song, And his praise from the end of the earth;

Ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein,

The isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice,

The villages that Kedar doth inhabit;

Let the inhabitants of Sela sing, Let them shout from the top of the mountains.

He shall stir up his zeal like a man of war:

He shall cry, yea, he shall shout aloud;

He shall do mightily against his enemies.

And I will bring the blind by at way that they know not;

In paths that they know not will I lead them:

I will make darkness light before them,

And crooked places straight.

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money;

Come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

And your labor for that which satisfieth not?

Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good,

And let your soul delight itself
