ing pardon to man for his guilt and sin-and truth, as contradistinguished from the ceremonial law, fulfilling all the types; for the law had only a shadow of good things to come, but Jesus was the substance, and in Him all the types and shadows were fulfilled; so that text will explain to you my interpretation of this, the truth that appeared in the character of the Lord Jesus Christ was a truth fulfilling all the promises and prophecies of God, and fulfilling all the types and shadows of the ceremonial law," we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." So, all the testimonies of Jehovah are fulfilled in Christ-that truth that denounced judgment again sin-that truth that proclaimed mercy to the sinner-that truth which none could understand till Jesus came, in whom, as we had in that beautiful psalm read to-day-"mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other," all the truth of eternal justice, manifested in the sufferings of Jesus, and all the truth of eternal mercy flowing to the chief of sinners, through the precious blood poured from the wounded side of Jesus.
the Godhead of Christ? Is there any Socinian in this congregation? How can I wish you a happy Christmas? Ah, my poor fellow-sinner, how can I wish you a happy Christmas? You talk in your blind, infidel notions of this divine person and divine being, and this beautiful moral character,—and you are going to meet,-what? A God before whom you are an ungodly sinner, the God of salvation whose salvation you have cast away! What will yo do when you come to stand before Jesus, Jehovah, "God manifest in the flesh ?" Oh, poor fellowsinner, turn away from your refuges of lies,—indeed you have no refuge at all— you have not even a refuge of lies to turn to; turn to Christ, that blessed God; read the 1st chapter of St. John, I beg that you will, and then look to Christ, and then you may find, perhaps, that there is, yea, if you do look to him, you will surely find that there is happiness and peace in coming to Christ to save your poor soul.
Then again, believer, look at the life and manifested glory of the Lord Jesus Christ,-are you looking to that?—are you looking to Christ as your refuge and salvation? Whoever you be, if you are, I wish you a happy Christmas, in knowing that "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.'
My dear little children, I wish you a happy Christmas ;- -Jesus was a child: I wish you a happy Christmas in knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ was a little child. Your parents sometimes mislead you, I am afraid, by telling you you are good children-(you may be good in a comparative sense, when you do what you are desired,)--but you are poor guilty sinners before God; if you can understand me, and if your conscience makes you afraid when you are sinful before your parents, if you turn away from your parents when you do wrong, you then know what sin is, and you are sinning before God. I remember, when a little child, knowing the meaning of, I will go bail for you. I suppose you have had such intercessors very often. Well, now, just ask yourselves, who will go bail for you to God? Oh, Jesus, your blessed Saviour has done so, he was born and lived like a little child, that he might be a righteous child, and a holy child, and fit to be bail for children; that he
Now, I said this verse contains the only elements of solid happiness. Let us go back for a moment and consider. Oh, believer, are you looking to the Lord Jesus Christ as the refuge of your souls? Is Christ indeed your hope? Well, I wish you a happy Christmas,-why? God is your salvation. "Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song, he is also become my salvation, therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation." Oh then, "rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, rejoice." I wish you happy Christmas, happy in your Lord and Saviour. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, therefore will we not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof,-there is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High."
Are there any of you here who deny
of Christ, till he is able to see the blessing of the Gospel, that all the righteousness of Jesus, and all the holiness of Jesus is given to him, is put down to his account to constitute his righteousness which he is to take with him, and to stand before the bar of God, then indeed he beholds the glory of Christ's righteousness, the glory of Immanuel's character.
V. But I said, there was in this text, THE RICH SALVATION OF JESUS. "We thi beheld his glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth," the grace that is in Jesus-that is no glory to unenlightened man. Man has no notion in his natural state of vation by grace, but of salvation by v in some shape or other-some modi' of grace and works is all that the s any idea of, he has no idea there is a reward, in the we for goodness, and so, poc tries to gain the reward. of the grace that is in salvation for the guilty lost, mercy for the those who have no and are outcasts there is the salv Christ Jesus.

might be fit to be surety for every sinner, and so for children. Oh look unto him, and then you shall have a happy Christmas. It is not toys, or vanities of that kind that can make you truly happy,-you have often had toys, and been tired of them, and thrown them away. So have your fathers and mothers,-all the pursuits of men are only toys, the toys of children, they get rid of them and throw them away, their houses, lands, equipages, and all these things, they are toys, poor foolish toys like your own, it is not in such things your happiness consists. But oh, if you have looked to God as your Father, if you have peace with God, then you will be happy. Remember the little child I told of on Snnday, that was playing a few days ago around the knee of its father, and last Sunday it was laid with its father in the same grave! My dear little children, look unto Jesus, and then I wish you a happy Christmas,— happy in Jesus, may the Lord make you happy.
So, you who are beyond the age of children, you young persons who have grown up to a time when you are entering on the world-oh, I wish you a happy Christmas, but it is not in your vanities and follies, and in your vain pursuits, it is not in them you can find happiness. Have you found happiness in them? Are you happy? No, you know you are not. Oh, then, look to Christ-" Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth :" then, dear young friends, I shall wish you a happy Christmas. Come to Jesus, there you will find peace, there you will find rest, joy in believing. Christ was as young as you; Christ passed through the days of childhood and youth, that his righteousness might stand for you, that your guilt and sin, and folly and wickedness might not cast you down to hell, but that you might have a righteous Saviour to rest your soul upon. May the Lord give you a happy Christmas, looking unto Jesus, you cannot be happy in any thing else, conscience tells you so, you know it.
Need I say to those more advanced in life, that there is no happiness when your sins are yet unpardoned-when you are ignorant of your God. How many Christmasses have you spent?-the hand of time is on many of you as well as on myself; we have passed over many and
many a Christmas, and are you just as foolish as you were in the early part of your life? Are your Christmas festivities all you know about, and possess, to make it a happy season? My poor fellow-sinner,—perhaps it is the last Christmas we may ever see. Certainly, there is not a question of it, that some of us who are in this Church to-day shall never see another Christmas. Oh, then, look to Christ, while it is called to-day, "to-day if you will hear his voice harden not your hearts." Oh, look unto him and then, let me wish you a happy Christmas, happy in Jesus, happy in peace with God, happy in being called, though it be at the eleventh hour, happy in being called to the feet of your Redeemer. May the Lord give you a happy Christmas. Then look at his great salvation. Oh, if you are looking to that, my dear friends, you have happiness.
And now, poor believer, I may address some of you whose hearts are tried and How weighed down with many cares. often the cares of the world come on us, and oppress us, and make us sad, and sigh, and be heavy,-troubles without, and troubles still more within, these vile bodies of sin and death, these hearts, this “law in our members warring against the law of our mind, and bringing us into subjection to the law of sin, which is in our members." Oh, how often these things constrain us to cry out, Oh, wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" However your heart may be sad, and oppressed with many trials, because the end is secure, "no trial for the present seemeth joyous, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruits of righteousness to them that are exercised thereby," and it shall yield them for you; wherefore I say, lift up your head and lift up your hearts," rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice,"—and then, if you look to this truth, remember that the fulfilment of all the promises of God in Christ, gives you a solid, sure security for all. If you can look into this book, and see all that has been promised of
