ing pardon to man for his guilt and sin-and truth, as contradistinguished from the ceremonial law, fulfilling all the types; for the law had only a shadow of good things to come, but Jesus was the substance, and in Him all the types and shadows were fulfilled; so that text will explain to you my interpretation of this, the truth that appeared in the character of the Lord Jesus Christ was a truth fulfilling all the promises and prophecies of God, and fulfilling all the types and shadows of the ceremonial law," we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." So, all the testimonies of Jehovah are fulfilled in Christ-that truth that denounced judgment again sin-that truth that proclaimed mercy to the sinner that truth which none could understand till Jesus came, in whom, as we had in that beautiful psalm read to-day—“ mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other," all the truth of eternal justice, manifested in the sufferings of Jesus, and all the truth of eternal mercy flowing to the chief of sinners, through the precious blood poured from the wounded side of Jesus.

Now, I said this verse contains the only elements of solid happiness. Let us go back for a moment and consider. Oh, believer, are you looking to the Lord Jesus Christ as the refuge of your souls? Is Christ indeed your hope? Well, I wish you a happy Christmas,-why? God is your salvation. "Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song, he is also become my salvation, therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation." Oh then, "rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, rejoice." I wish you a happy Christmas, happy in your Lord and Saviour. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, therefore will we not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof,-there is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High."

the Godhead of Christ? Socinian in this congregation? can I wish you a happy Christmas? Ah, my poor fellow-sinner, how can I wish you a happy Christmas? You talk in your blind, infidel notions of this divine person and divine being, and this beautiful moral character,—and you are going to meet,-what? A God before whom you are an ungodly sinner, the God of salvation whose salvation you have cast away! What will yo do when you come to stand before Jesus, Jehovah, "God manifest in the flesh ?" Oh, poor fellowsinner, turn away from your refuges of lies,-indeed you have no refuge at all— you have not even a refuge of lies to turn to; turn to Christ, that blessed God; read the 1st chapter of St. John, I beg that you will, and then look to Christ, and then you may find, perhaps, that there is, yea, if you do look to him, you will surely find that there is happiness and peace in coming to Christ to save your poor soul.

Then again, believer, look at the life and manifested glory of the Lord Jesus Christ,—are you looking to that?—are you looking to Christ as your refuge and salvation? Whoever you be, if you are, I wish you a happy Christmas, in knowing that "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."

My dear little children, I wish you a happy Christmas ;-Jesus was a child: I wish you a happy Christmas in knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ was a little child. Your parents sometimes mislead you, I am afraid, by telling you you are good children--(you may be good in a comparative sense, when you do what you are desired,)--but you are poor guilty sinners before God; if you can understand me, and if your conscience makes you afraid when you are sinful before your parents, if you turn away from your parents when you do wrong, you then know what sin is, and you are sinning before God. I remember, when a little child, knowing the meaning of, I will go bail for you. suppose you have had such intercessors very often. Well, now, just ask yourselves, who will go bail for you to God? How often the cares of the world come on us, and oppress us, and make us sad, and sigh, and be heavy,-troubles without, and troubles still more within,-these vile bodies of sin and death, these hearts, this "law in our members warring against the law of our mind, and bringing us into subjection to the law of sin, which is in our members." Oh, how often these things constrain us to cry out, Oh, wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" Well, let us add, "I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord." Oh, dear friends, there is rest, and peace, and joy in believing; lift up your heart, believer, though oppressed, and tried, and afflicted, remember Jesus is "the same yesterday, to day, and for ever." If it should be your last Christmas on earth, where will you spend your next? with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven! If cut off from this world, it is better to depart and be with Christ. Oh, look unto him and then, let me wish you a happy Christmas,happy in Jesus, happy in peace with God, happy in being called, though it be at the eleventh hour, happy in being called to the feet of your Redeemer. May the Lord give you a happy Christmas. Then look at his great salvation. Oh, if you are looking to that, my dear friends, you have happiness.

Christ fulfilled in Christ, in his first advent, remember, that all the predictions of God shall be fulfilled in all that is to come. So surely as he came, at his first advent, to die for our sins, so surely shall he appear a second time without sin unto salvation,-so surely shall that vile body be fashioned into his glorious body; so surely, when he comes, and "when you see him, you shall be like him, for you shall see him as he is,"—so surely you shall ever be with the Lord, sorrow and sighing shall flee away for evermore.
