3 O JEHOVAH, what is man,

That Thou shouldest care for him!

What is the son of feeble man,

That Thou shouldest take thought of him!

4 Man is like a breath!

His days are like a shadow which is passing away!

O JEHOVAH, bow Thy heavens and come down;
Touch the mountains that they may smoke.

6 Hurl Thy lightnings, and scatter them,

Send forth Thine arrows, and melt them.

7 Put forth Thy hand from on high;

Rescue me and deliver me from the mighty waters—
From the hand of aliens,

8 Whose mouth speaketh lies,

And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood!

9 0 God, I will sing a new song unto Thee,

With the ten-stringed lute will I hymn unto Thee—

10 Unto Him who giveth salvation to kings

Who rescueth David, His servant, from the destroying sword.

Rescue me, and deliver me from the hand of aliens,

Whose mouth speaketh lies,

And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood!

12 That our sons may be like plants,

Well-grown in their youth—

That our daughters may be like the corner-pillars,
Skilfully carved for the building of a palace—

13 That our granaries may be full

That they may supply all kinds of provision

[blocks in formation]

That our flocks may produce thousands

That they may produce tens of thousands in our fields14 That our cattle may be heavy with young

That there be not a violent or premature bringing forth, Nor any distressful cry in our streets.

15 Happy are the people, who are in such a state! Happy are the people, who have JEHOVAH for their God!

PSALM CXLV.

1 I WILL extol Thee, O my God and King, And I will bless Thy Name for ever and ever.

2 Every day will I bless Thee,

And praise Thy Name for ever and ever.

3 Great is JEHOVAH and exceedingly to be praised, Yea, His greatness is unsearchable!

4 Generation after generation, men shall praise Thy doings, And they shall proclaim Thy mighty deeds.

5 They shall proclaim the glorious splendour of Thy majesty, And I will tell of Thy wonderful works.

6 Yea, they shall speak of the might of Thy fearful acts, And I will declare Thy greatness.

7 They shall pour forth memorials of Thy great goodness, And sing aloud of Thy benevolence.

8 Gracious and merciful is JEHOVAH,

Slow to anger and abounding in loving-kindness.

PSALM CXLV.

This is an alphabetical Psalm, con

structed similarly to Psalms xxv. and

xxxiv. See Ps. xxxvii. Note.

9 Good is JEHOVAH unto all;

Yea, His mercies are over all His works.

10 All Thy works praise Thee, O JEHOVAH;
And Thy pious worshippers bless Thee.

They speak of the glory of Thy kingdom,
And discourse of Thy greatness.

12 They make known unto the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious splendour of His kingdom.

13 THY kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

And Thy dominion endureth through all generations.

14 JEHOVAH Upholdeth all who are falling, And maketh erect all who are bowed down.

15 The eyes of all look unto Thee,

up

And Thou givest them their food in due season.

16 THOU openest Thy hand,

And satisfiest the desire of every living creature.

17 Benevolent is JEHOVAH in all His ways, And kind in all His doings.

18 JEHOVAH is nigh unto all who call upon Him— Unto all who call upon Him in faithfulness.

19 HE fulfilleth the desire of those who reverence Him, Yea, He hearkeneth to their cry, and saveth them.

20 JEHOVAH preserveth all those who love Him; But He destroyeth all the wicked.

21 My mouth shall speak the praise of JEHOVAH;

And let all flesh bless His holy Name for ever and ever.

PSALM CXLVI.

1 PRAISE ye JEHOVAH!

O my soul, praise JEHOVAH.

2 I will praise JEHOVAH while I live,

I will hymn unto my God while I have my being. 3 Place not your confidence in princes

In a child of man, with whom is no salvation.

4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; In that day, his devices come to nothing!

5 Happy is he who hath the God of Jacob for his help Whose expectation is in JEHOVAH, his God;

6 Who made heaven and earth,

The sea also, and every thing which is in them-
7 Who preserveth His faithfulness for ever-
Who executeth judgment for the oppressed-
Who giveth food to the hungry!

JEHOVAH setteth at liberty the captives!

8 JEHOVAH openeth the eyes of the blind!
JEHOVAH maketh erect those who are bowed down!

JEHOVAH loveth the righteous!

9 JEHOVAH preserveth the stranger!

He raiseth up the orphan and the widow;
But maketh crooked the path of the wicked!

JEHOVAH shall reign for ever!

Thy God, O Sion, through successive generations!

Praise ye

JEHOVAH !

PSALM CXLVI.

9 maketh crooked &c.—i. e. God prevents the wicked from arriving at that point

at which they were aiming; in other words, He defeats their designs. Compare Ps. xxiii. 3. Note 2.

PSALM CXLVII.

1 PRAISE ye JEHOVAH!

Truly, it is right to hymn our God!

Truly, it is delightful!

Very becoming is praise !

2 JEHOVAH buildeth Jerusalem;

HE gathereth together the dispersed of Israel.

3 HE healeth the broken in heart,

And assuageth their griefs.

4 HE counteth the number of the stars;

HE giveth names to them all.

5 Great is our Lord and abounding in might; His intelligence is infinite!

6 JEHOVAH raiseth up the meek;

HE bringeth low the wicked, even to the ground.

7 Sing unto JEHOVAH with a song of praise, Hymn unto our God with the harp!

8 HE covereth the heavens with thick clouds, HE prepareth rain for the earth;

HE causeth the grass to spring up on the hills.

9 HE giveth to the cattle their food—

To the young ravens also, which call upon Him.

io He hath no pleasure in the strength of the horse, He hath no delight in man's swiftness of foot.

11 JEHOVAH delighteth in those who reverence Him— Who wait in confidence for His loving-kindness.
