The impious letter that contained these threatnings was brought to king HEZEKIAH. And he read it. And he went up unto the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. Jealous of his honor, and mindful of his people, the Lord interfered. Ignorant as the Assyrian monarch was of the God of Israel, the God of Israel was well acquainted with him. I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me, and thy tumult is come up into mine ears: therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest. Then the angel of the Lord went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred and four score and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went, and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 37 Isaiah.

Let us commit our cause to God, in the spirit of faith, and we may humbly hope to witness the deliverance of Britain, in the confusion and overthrow of her enemy. “ I, the Lord Jehovah, I will suddenly make him run away from her.” The enemy said, I will pursue, I will CS

overtake, I will divide the spoil: my soul shall be satisfied upon them, I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them. Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, amongst the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Exodus 15. 9, 10, 11.

Suffer me, my brethren, to detain you a few moments longer. Suffer me to remind you, that you have a spiritual adversary to contend with, an adversary, artful, malicious, vigilent, indefatigable, that goeth about like a roaring lion secking whom he may devour-an adversary, that would deprive you of your eternal habitation, and cut you off from the proffered privileges of everlasting glory and immortality.

I would call upon, as you value the prosperity of your souls, to oppose this foe. Thousands are subject to his influence. He is the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that worketh in the children of disobedience, 2 Eph. 2-Thousands are led captive by him at his will. Snap asunder the chain of so ignoble a captivity. “ Resist the devil and he shall flee from you.

Heaven, is on your side, in this contest. You have strong motives and means of defence. The great captain of your salvation encourages you. “Be of good cheer,” says he, “I haveovercome.” By his death, he overcame death and him that had the power of death, that is, the Devil. You have the whole armour of God to cover you in the day of battle. Go forth then and resist the Devil, stedfast in the faith, believing that Jesus Christ, by his one offering once offered upon the cross, hath finished transgression, made an end of sin, and made reconciliation for iniquity, and confiding in his arm, grace, and promise, for your success in every spiritual engagement, , and for your final and everlasting triumph over death and hell. So engaged, no weapon formed against you shall

prosper. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerers, through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 8 Romans 38, 39.

BRAVE DEFENDERS of your King, your Country, your Families, and Friends! You wear the badges of war,--you carry the weapons of destruction-you look like warriors. But your object is Peace, your desire is Peace, your end is Peace. You manifest it to be such, when you request a Minister of Peace to consecrate the Banners of War. You demonstrate it to be such, when you implore the God of Peace, with humble confidence and hope, to be your Leader--to strengthen your hands,—to confirm your courage--to stimulate your activity-to bless your exertions—to shield you in danger--to cover your heads in the day of Battle—and ultimately to crown them with the olive branch of Peace.

Should you be called forth-against whom do you you lift the sword?

Against the Enemies of Peace--the Enemies of Order, the Enemies of Humanity, the Enemies of your Country, the Enemies of your Sovereign, the Enemies of Mankind, the Enemies of God.

By a strange inconsistency, which has marked their career, they proffer philanthrophy, fraternity, freedom, but they spread universal wretchedness, discord, and slavery! To follow their deadly and desolating steps,

would be to wade in the blood of our species,—to witness barbarities that would freeze the current of our own-and to hear impieties and blasphemies, which even Hell herself would hardly dare to breathe.

They have entered other Countries by Perfidy. They inveigled the Poor. They corrupted the rich. They deceived the Good. They bribed the Wicked. Thus they obtained a treacherous Possession. And the miserable Victims of their Treachery haye fallen indiscriminately, good and bad, rich and poor, a sacrifice to their avarice, their lust, their cruelty, or their ambition.

The good sense, however, of Englishmen, under the providence of God, has hitherto detected and withstood the Imposter. Tired at length with artifice, he now assumes his real Character. He appears what he is. He openly and impiously threatens our King, our Constitution, our Laws, our Liberties, our Religion. May the God of our Fathers shield them! May British valour defend them.

You, my Countrymen, are their avowed Champions-you stand forward to protect them--in so doing, you honour your fathers, you venerate yonr ancestors. Were it possible, they would burst their sepulchres, which you preserve from profanation, to thank you. Were it possible, your unborn Children---your Children's Children, would wish for Being, to place the Laurel on your Brows, as the Guardians and Defenders of their hereditary Rights.

Go, then—if your Country needs it, if the foe advances-Go--and the blessing and defence of Heaven go with you.
