PREFACE.

THE flood of light which has been shed upon the times of Luther within the last quarter of a century has awakened a new and general interest in his history. The rise, progress, and immediate results of the REFORMATION have been portrayed with masterly skill and in various forms; and, of course, the great Reformer himself has been exhibited, prominently, as the master-spirit of that wonderful revolution. But upon so broad a canvass as a picture of the Reformation requires, no single figure, however commanding, can absorb the beholder's attention. It must be separated from the group, and from the lofty mountains and the undefinable expanse which form the back-ground of the scene, that it may be surveyed in its independent and unrelieved proportions. It may lose something of the grace and attractiveness which the general interest of the picture lent it, but it will gain quite as much by the distinctness with which its figure and symmetry can be observed.
