Introduction The purpose of this study guide is to assist you in your study of USAFI Course C 858, The Slide Rule. Through the study of this course you should develop the ability to perform basic slide-rule operations with proficiency and confidence. As you gain skill in manipulating the slide rule, you will probably develop an appreciation for the role the slide rule plays as a timesaving device. Materials You Will Need Your textbook is Slide Rule Simplified by Charles O. Harris, copyright 1961. The textbook, this study guide, a 10-inch Mannheim slide rule, lesson sheets, and envelopes for mailing the written work are furnished by USAFI. You will have to supply your own pencils or pen, scratch paper, and erasers. Organization of This Study Guide The course is divided into 12 lessons. You should make every attempt to complete lessons 1 through 11. Lesson 12 is optional and need not be attempted unless you have some knowledge of logarithms and desire a more thorough understanding of the basis of the slide rule. Each lesson in this study guide follows the same general pattern. At the beginning of a lesson you will find a brief introduction, giving a synopsis of the lesson and relating it to other lessons. Next, you will find the text assignment which gives the specific pages you are to study in your text. The study notes follow the text assignment. They attempt to do for you what an instructor normally does in a classroom. Read these notes carefully since they will contain many helpful hints that will aid you in your course work. The page number or numbers preceding each study note refer to the page or pages in the text where the material is discussed. Following the study notes you will find self-examination exercises. These exercises give you an opportunity to test your understanding of the material covered in the lesson. Check your answers with those given in the Key immediately following the self-examination.
