LMIGHTY, Everliving God, whose most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of our sins, did shed out of his most precious side both water and blood; and gave commandment to his disciples that they should go teach all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; regard, we beseech thee, our supplications; and grant that the persons now to be baptized may receive the fullness of thy grace, and ever remain in the number of thy faithful and elect children, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ Then shall the Minister ask the name of each Person to be baptized, and shall sprinkle or pour Water upon him (or, if he shall desire it, shall immerse him in Water), saying:

I BAPTIZE thee in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

¶ Then shall be said the Lord's Prayer, all kneeling: UR FATHER who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

¶ Then may the Minister conclude with extemporary Prayer.

THE CATECHISM

APPOINTED TO BE LEARNED BY ALL BAPTIZED CHILDREN

AS SOON AS THEY ARE ABLE, WITH ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ON THE CREED AND BAPTISMAL COVENANT.

I. GOD.

I. HIS NATURE AND ATTRIBUTES.

WHO made you?

Answer. God.

Quest. Who is God?

Question.

Ans. The Creator of all things.

Quest. What is God?

Ans. An uncreated Spirit.

Quest. Where is God?

Ans. God is every-where.

Quest. What does God know?

Ans. God is all-wise; he knoweth all things, even the

thoughts of our hearts.

Quest. What can God do?

Ans. God is almighty; he doeth whatsoever he will.

Quest. How long has God existed?

Ans. God is eternal; he has lived always, and will live for

Ans. God is holy; he hateth all workers of iniquity.

Quest. Is God merciful?

Ans. "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy."

Quest. Is God just?

Ans. The Lord is just, rewarding the righteous and punish

ing the wicked.

Quest. Is God true?

Ans. He is "the God of truth." He "cannot lie."

§ 2. THE PERSONS OF GOD.

Answer. "There is none other God but one."

Quest. Are there more persons in the Godhead than one? Ans. There are three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one.

Quest. Is the Father God?

Ans. "To us there is but one God, the Father."

Quest. Is the Son God?

Ans. Christ "is over all, God blessed forever." He is the true God.

Quest. Is the Holy Ghost God?

Ans. The Holy Ghost is "the Eternal Spirit."

Quest. In what name are Christians baptized?

Ans. In the name of the Holy Trinity-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

II. OF CREATION.

§ 1. THE WORLD.

Question.

CAN you repeat the first verse of the Bible ?

Answer. " In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.".

Quest. Does God preserve all things which he has made? Ans. He upholdeth all things by the word of his power.

§ 2. MAN.

Question.

OF what did God make man's body?

Answer. "Of the dust of the ground."

Quest. How did God make man's soul?

Ans. God "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul."

Quest. How did the soul and body differ?

Ans. The body is material and mortal, the soul is spiritual and immortal.

Quest. Was man created good?

Ans. He was; God created man in his own image.

Quest. In what did this image of God consist?

Ans. "In righteousness and true holiness."

Quest. What authority was given to man at the creation ? Ans. God gave him dominion over every living thing. Quest. Where did God place our first parents?

Ans. In the garden of Eden.

Quest. What law was given them?

Ans. The law of perfect obedience.

III. MAN'S FALL AND SINFUL STATE.

§ I. SIN. Question.

DID

our first parents continue holy and happy?

Answer. They sinned against God, and fell into misery. Quest. What is sin?

Ans. Any transgression of the law of God.
Quest. What was the sin of our first parents?
Ans. Their eating of the forbidden fruit.
Quest. By whom were they tempted to sin?
Ans. By the devil in the form of a serpent.

§ 2. GUILT, PREVALENCE, AND CONSEQUENCES of sin.

Question.

WHAT evil did their sin bring upon them?

Answer. They lost the image of God, were driven out

of Eden, and became subject to pain and death.

Quest. Did their sin harm any besides themselves?

Ans. "By the offense of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation."

Quest. In what state are mankind born?

Ans. In the image of fallen Adam, destitute of original righteousness.

Quest. What are the miseries of this condition?

Ans. All mankind being born in sin, are by nature under the wrath of God.

IV. SALVATION.

1. THE SOURCE AND GROUNDS OF SALVATION, NAMELY: THE LOVE OF GOD IN CHRIST AND REDEMPTION THROUGH CHRIST.

Question.

DID God leave mankind in sin and misery?

Answer. No; "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Quest. What did the Son of God do to save sinners ?

Ans. He became man, lived, suffered, died, and rose again. Quest. How did he become man?

Ans. Christ, though God, took upon him the form of a serv

ant, and was made in the likeness of man, having a human body and soul.

Quest. What example does Christ's life afford us?

Ans. An example of perfect goodness and holiness.
Quest. What did Christ suffer for us?

Ans. "He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
