is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go; and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind ? Treasures of wickedness profit nothing. For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him d? The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered; he openeth his eyes, and he is not. They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave'; with kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves; or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver. There the prisoners rest together, they hear not the voice of the oppressor; the small and the great are there, and the servant is free from his master". The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all'.
The wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorrethk. He bath said in his heart, I shall not be moved; for I shall never be in adversity'. But they that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; none of them can redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him"; that he should still live for ever, and not see corruption; for he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless, man being in honour, abideth not; he is like the beasts that perish. This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Like sheep they are laid in the grave, death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling". Take heed and beware of covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate full of sores, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores.
And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. And in hell he lift
eyes, being in torments; and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried, and said, Father Abraham, bave mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
