For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. Sect. 4. And administer necessary reproof and

correction to them. The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. The commandment is a lamp, and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from himo. He that spareth his rod, hateth his son; but he that loveth him, chasteneth him betimes. A fool despiseth his father's instruction; but he that regardeth reproof is prudent'. Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way, and he that hateth reproof shall die. The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul; but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. Chasten thy son while there is hope. We have had fathers of our flesh, which corrected us, and we gave them reverence.

For what son is he whom the Father chasteneth not"? Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea he shall give delight unto thy soul'. A wise son maketh a glad father; but å foolish son is the heaviness of his motherk. Sect. 5. That honour and obedience are due from

children to their parents. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth theea. Ye shall fear every man his father, and his mother, I am the Lord your God". A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master. she is old". Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God". Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right: Honour thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise, that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth'. Children obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing unto the Lords. If any widow have children, let them learn first to show piety at home, and to requite their parents ; for that is good and acceptable before God". Sect. 6. Disobedience, disregard, and doing injury to

parents, are crimes of the deepest dye. In the last days, perilous times shall come; for men shall be lovers of their ownselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, from such turn away“. There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. Inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents; without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection: they that commit such things are worthy of death”. Why do you transgress the commandinent of God by your tradition; for God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and thy mother; and he that curseth father or mother, let him die the death : But ye say, whosoever shall say to his father or mother, It is a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me, and honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition And

ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother, making the word of God of none effecto.

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach'. The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley

shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat its. And he that curseth his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death. Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, it is no transgression, the same is the companion of a destroyer'. young persons to be attentive to the instructions of wise and pious parents, and to conform to them in their early days.

My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments with thee, so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding, Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God". If thou seek bim he will be found of thee, but if thou forsake him he will cast thee off for everk. My son forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandınents; for length of days, and long life, and peace shall they add to thee. find favour and good understanding in the sight of God". My son, let not them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion, so shall they be life to thy soul

fore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth, lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel, lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, and thou mourn at the last when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, and say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; and have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed meo? His bones are full of the sins of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. A certain man had two sons, and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me; and he divided to them his living. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity, and fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof. — Because you have set at nought all my counsel, and would have none of my reproof. I also will laugh at your calamity, and mock when your fear cometh. When your fear cometh as desolation, when distress and anguish cometh upon you: Then they shall call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me. They would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices'.
