Queft. 9. How was the application of redemption typified under the Old Teftament ?

Anfw. By prinkling the blood of the facrifice upon the people, Exod. xxiv. 8.

Queft. 1o. Does not the application of redemption prefuppofe the purchase thereof?

Anw. Yes it could never be applied, if it were not first purchased, Job xxxiii. 24.

Queft. 11. How then could it be applied to the old-teftament faints, when it was not then actual'y purchased?

Anfw. It was applied upon the credit of the bond, which the Surety gave from eternity; of making a meritorious purchafe in the fulness of time, Prov. viii. 23. Pfal. Ixxxix. 28, 29.

Queft. 12. Can the purchase of redemption avail us, if it is not applied?

Anfo. No more than meat can feed, cloths warm, or medicines heal us, if they are not used, John i. 12. Queft. 13. When may the application of redemption be faid to be effectual?

Anfw. When it produces the saving effects for which it is defigned."

Queft. 14. What are thefe faving effects?

Anfw. The opening of the eyes of finners, and turning them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, Acts xxvi. 18.

Queft. 15 If the application of redemption be effectual, what need is there of any after-endeavours to grow in grace and holiness?

Anfw. The giving us all things that pertain to life and goalinefs, is the greatest encouragement and excitement to add to our faith, virtue, etc.; that is, to use all fuitable endeavours, in the ftrength of grace, after fpiritual growth, 2 Pet. i. 3, 5.

Queft. 16. Is there any application of redemption that is not effectual ? Anjw. Yes:

Anfw. Yes there is an outward application thereof in baptin, which is not, of itself effectual, as is evident in the instance of Simon Magus, who was baptized, and yet remained in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity, Acts viii. 13, 23.

Queft 17. By whom is the redemption pnrchased by Chrift effectually applied?

Anfw. By His HOLY SPIRIT, Tit. iii. 5, 6. Queft. 18. Why is the application of redemption afcribed unto the Spirit?

Anfw. To fhew, that each of the three perfons, in the adorable trinity, is equally hearty and cordial in the work of man's redemption; the FATHER in ordaining, the Son in purchafing, and the SPIRIT in applying it, John vi. 57, 63.

Queft, 19. Why is the Spirit in this work called the Holy Spirit?

Anfw. Because, as he is effentially holy, fo he is holy in all his works and operations, Pfal. li. 11. Rom. xv. 16.

Queft. 20. Why is redemption faid to be applied by the Spirit of Christ, or His Holy Spirit?

Anfw. Because the Spirit is fent for this work more immediately by Chrift, and through his mediation, as the leading fruit of his purchase, John xiv. 16. and xvi. 7.

Queft. 21. What is the difference betwixt the purchase of redemption and the application of it?

Anfw. The purchase of redemption is a work done without us, but the application of it takes place within us, Ifa. Ixiii. 3. Rom. viii. 16.

Quest. 22. To whom is redemption effectually applied by the Spirit ?

Anfw. To all those for whom Chrift has purchafed it, and to none else, John vi. 37. Eph. i. 13. Queft. 23. What means doth the Spirit make use of in the application of redemption? Anfw. The

Anfw. The Spirit of God makes ufe of the reading, but especially the preaching of the word, for this end, Rom. x. 17. 1 Cor. iii. 5.

Quest. 24. Are these means effectual of them. felves?

Anfw. No without the power and efficacy of the Spirit accompanying them, I Theff. i. 5.

Queft. 25. What is incumbent on us, in way of duty, that the redemption, purchased by Chrift, may be effectually applied unto us?

Anfw. To fearch for the knowledge of Chrift as for hid treafure; and to pray for the Spirit to tef tify of Chrift unto us, in the faith of his own promife, He fhall glorify me, lays Christ, for he shall receive of mine, and fhall fhew it unto you, Prov. ii. 4. John xv. 26. and xvi. 14.

30. QUEST. How doth the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Chrift? ANSW. The Spirit applieth to us the redemption purchafed by Chrift, by working faith in us, and thereby uniting us to Chrift, in our effectual calling.

Queft. 1. What is the fpecial work of the Spirit in the application of redemption?

Anfw. It is to unite finners to Chrift, Rom viii. 9, II.

Quest. 2. Can we have no fhare in the redemption purchafed by Chrift, without union to his perfon ?

Anfw. No because all purchafed bleffings are lodged in his person, and go along therewith, John iii. 35. John v. 12.

Queft. 3. What is it to be united to his perfon? Anfw. It is to be joined unto, or made one with him, I Cor. vi. 17. Rom. xii. 5.

Queft. 4. Is it then a personal union?

Anfw. No;

227 Anfw. No; it is indeed an union of persons but not a perfonal union: believers make not one perfon with Chrift, but one body myftical, whereof he is the head, 1 Cor. xii. 12, 13.

Queft. 5. How can we be united to Chrift, feeing he is in heaven, and we on earth?

Anf. Although the human nature of Christ be in heaven, yet his person is every where, Matth.

xxviii. 20.

Quest. 6 Where can he be found on earth, in erder to our being united unto him?

Anfw. In the wORD, which is nigh to us, and Chrift therein, Rom. x. 8, 9.

Queft. 7. By what means are we united to Chrift, as brought nigh in the word?

Anfw. By the means of faith, or believing, Eph. iii. 17.7 hat Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith. Queft. 8. Is it the indifpenfable duty of all who hear the word, to believe on Chrift, or come to him by faith?

Anfw. Yes furely for this is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son, Jesus Chrift, John iii. 23.

Queft. 9. Are any that hear the word able to believe of themselves?

Anfw. No: faith is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God, Eph. ii. 8.

Queft 10. How then is faith wrought in the foul? Anfo. By the Holy Spirit, who is called the Spirit of faith, 2 Cor. iv. 13. because he is the prin- cipal efficient cause thereof.

Queft. 11. Why can no lefs a worker, than the Spirit of God, work this faith?

Anfu. Because it is a work that requires almighty power, even the fame power which was wrought in Cbrift, when he was raised from the dead, Eph. i. 19, 20.

Queft. 12. What is the end or defign, of the Spirit in working faith in us? Anfw. That

Anfw. That thereby we may be united to Chrift Eph. iii. 17.

Queft. 13. To whom are finners united, before union with Chrift?

Anfw. To the first Adam, Rom. v. 12.

Queft. 14. By what bond are they united to the first Adam?

Anfw. By the bond of the covenant of works, whereby Adam, who was the natural root of his pofterity, became their moral root also, bearing them as their reprefentative in that covenant, Rom.

v. 19.

Queft. 15. How is this union diffolved?

Anfw. By being married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, Rom. vii. 4.

Queft. 16. Is Chrift united to us before we be united to him?

Anfw. The union is mutual, but it begins first on his fide, John iv. 19.

Queft. 17. How does it begin firft on his fide?
Anfw. By unition, which is before union.

Queft. 18 What understand you by unition? Anw. It is the Spirit of Chrift uniting himself first to us, according to the promise, I will put my Spirit within you, Ezek xxxvi. 27.

Queft. 19. How does the Spirit of Christ unite himfelf firft unto us ?

Anfw. By coming in to the foul, at the happy moment appointed for the spiritual marriage with Chrift, and quickning it, fo that it is no more morally dead, but alive, having new spiritual powers put into it, Eph. ii. 5. Even when we were dead in fins, he hath quickned us.

Queft. 20. Whether is the Spirit of Chrift, upon his firft entrance, actively or paffively received ?

nfw. The foul, morally dead in fin, can be no more but a mere paffive recipient, Ezek. xxxvii. 14. And shall put my Spirit in you, and ye shall live. Quest, 21.
