At that time: Jefus paffing by, faw a man that


had been blind from his birth: and his difciples put this question to him: Mafter, who hath finned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jefus answered: Neither he nor his parents finned; but that the works of God may be manifefted in him 2. I muft do the work of him that fent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had faid this, he fpit on the ground, and having made clay with the spittle, he spread the clay on his eyes, and faid to him: Go wash in the pool of Siloe (which fignifieth, he that is fent.) He went therefore and wafhed, and came back feeing. The neighbours therefore, and fuch as had feen him before, (for he was a beggar) faid: Is not this he that fat and begged? Some faid, this is he: others faid, No; but it is one like him. But he faid: I am he. Then they faid to him: How were thy eyes opened? He answered: That man, who is called Jefus, made clay and anointed my eyes, and faid to me: Go to the pool of Siloe and wash. And I went and wafhed, and received my fight. And he faid to them: He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I fee. Then fome of the Pharifees faid: This man is not of God, who keepeth not the Sabbath-day. But others faid: How can a man, that is a finner, do fuch miracles? And there was a diffention among them. They faid therefore again to the blind-man: What fayeft thou of him, that opened thy eyes? And he faid: He is a Prophet. The Jews therefore would not believe that he ever had been blind, and had received his fight, till they called the parents of him, who had received his fight: and they afked them, faying: Is this your fon, who, you fay, was born blind? How then doth he now fee? His parents answered them, and faid: We know this man to be our fon, and that he was born blind; but by what means he now feeth, we know not: neither know we who hath opened his eyes: Ask him; he is of age; let him fpeak for himself. His parents faid this, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had now refolved, that if any one should confefs him to be the Chrift, he fhould be put out of the fynagogue. For this reafon his parents faid: He is of age; afk him. Then they called again the man that had been blind, and faid to him: Give glory to God; we know this man is a finner. He faid therefore to them: Whether he be a finner, or no, I know not: but one thing I know; that whereas I was blind, I can now fee. Then they faid to him: What did he do to thee? How did he open thine eyes? He answered them: I have told you already, and you have heard: Why would you hear it again? Have you a mind to become his difciples? Then they reviled him, and said: Be a Expl. He bould be excommunicated.

thou his difciple; but we are the difciples of Mofes. We know God fpoke to Mofes ; but as for this man, we know not whence he is. The man anfwered, and faid to them: There is fomething wonderful in that you fhould not know from whence he is, when he hath opened my eyes: for we know God heareth not finners: but if any one be a fervant of God, and do his will, him he heareth. Since the world began it was never heard, that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man was not of God, he could not do any thing. They answered and faid to him: Thou waft wholly born in fins, and doft thou teach us? And they caft him out. Jefus heard that they had caft him out, and having found him, he faid to him: Believest thou in the Son of God? He answered and faid: Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him? And Jefus faid to him: Thou haft seen him, and 'tis he that is talking to thee. And he faid: Lord, I believe; and falling down he adored him.


OFFERTORY. P. 65. O ye Gentiles, blefs the Lord our God, and make heard the voice of his praise who hath preferved my life, and hath not permitted my feet to flip. Bleffed is the Lord, who hath not rejected my prayer, nor turned afide his mercy from me.

N thofe days: A Sunamite's came to Elifeus on mount Carmel: and when the man of God faw her coming towards him, he faid to Giezi his fervant: Behold that Sunamites: go therefore and meet her, and fay to her: Is all well with thee

and with thy husband, and with thy child? And fhe answered: All is well. And being come unto the mount to the man of God, fhe took hold of his feet and Giezi came to put her away. But the man of God faid: Let her alone: for her foul is in anguish, and the Lord hath concealed it, and hath not made it known to me. And she said: Did I defire a fon of my Lord? Did I not fay: Do not deceive me? And he faid to Giezi: Gird thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go. If any man meet thee, falute him not: and if any one falute thee, answer him not: and lay my staff on the face of the child. But the child's mother said: As the Lord liveth, and as thy foul liveth, I will not leave thee. He arose therefore and followed her. And Giezi was gone before them, and had laid the ftaff on the child's face; but he had neither voice, nor feeling and he went back again to meet him, and told him, faying: The child arofe not. Elifeus therefore went into the house, and behold the child lay dead on his bed and being come in, he fhut the door upon himself and the child, and prayed to the Lord. And rifing up, he lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands, and he ftretched himself upon him; and the flesh of the child grew warm. Then arifing, he walked once to and fro in the houfe, and went up again, and laid himself upon him: and the child gaped feven times, and opened his eyes. Then he called Giezi, and faid to him: Call the Sunamitefs. Who being called, went to him. He faid to her: Take thy fon. She came, and threw herself at his feet, and fell proftrate on the ground: and fhe took her fon, and went out, and Elifeus returned to Galgala.
