RECORDS OF CHRIST'S MINISTRY. PART I. THE PREACHING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST: SECT. I.* General View of the Dispensation by Jesus Christ; His Power and Dignity. MATT. MARK LUKE JOHN I. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. "He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father), full of • The rendering in this Section is according to the common version in the Appendix will be given twe other renderings. SECT. II. General View of the Ministry of the Baptist. MATT. III. Now in those days MARK I. THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was this: 2 As it is written cometh John the Bap. in Isaiah the prophet, † tist, preaching in the 'Behold, I send my mesdesert of Judea, 2 and senger before thy face, saying, "Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven draweth near." who shall prepare thy 3 For this is he that was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, straight;' so John came saying, 'The voice of baptizing in the desert, LUKE III. Now this John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan; and they were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto` them, "Ye broods of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the wrath about to come? Bring forth therefore fruit meet for repentance : 9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our fa ther;' for I say unto you, God is able from these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 But even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire. sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a leathern girdle about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey. 5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and all the in habitants of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.' 7 Then said he to the multitudes that came forth to be baptized by him, "Ye broods of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the wrath about to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, God is able from these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 But even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire." JOHN MATT. The associations with Teacher are not yet sufficiently fixed; and Master is often ambiguous in its import. It is evident from John i. 38, that διδασκαλος is the rendering of ῥαββι. † στρατευόμενοι, persons engaged in military service. Luke often uses στρατιώτης, soldier, and it seems, therefore, reasonable to conclude that he meant to denote that these persons were actually engaged in some warlike expedition. SECT. III.
