The reading of the Holy Gospel according to

W

Matthew.

HEN Jesus was entered into a ship, His disciples followed Him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but He was asleep. And His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And He saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!

R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
Show us Thy mercy, O Lord;
R. And grant us Thy salvation.

Lord, hear our prayer;

R. And let our cry come unto Thee.

Our help standeth in the Name of the Lord,

R. Who made heaven and earth.

The Lord be with you:

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

LORD GOD of our Fathers, who, in directing

saving of his house, didst instruct mankind how they might pass in safety over the mighty waters; Favourably regard Thy humble servant before Thee, who implores Thy blessing upon this vessel [or, upon his vessel], now ready to depart from this port. Answer him, we beseech Thee, according to his faith and let Thy blessing descend and rest upon the vessel, and upon those entrusted with the care and management of the same, the commander, the officers, and the crew; and upon all who shall embark therein. May the Angel of Thy presence go with them and defend them. Guide and protect them in the midst of danger and perplexity; deliver them from all the perils of the deep; and carry them in safety to the place [or, places] of their destination. Prosper them in all their labours in the way of righteousness; and may their voyage issue to the benefit of themselves and their employers, and to the well-being of their country and of all men. Finally, in Thy mercy, bring them back to their own land in health and peace, to glorify and declare Thy goodness, and give thanks to Thee in Thy holy Church. Hear and accept us in the Name and for the merits of Thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, Father Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, One God, world without end.

R. Amen.

Our Father, which art in heaven, &c. (those present following the Minister).

The Benediction.

LESSED be the Lord God of Israel, and blessed be His glorious Name for ever and ever. The blessing of God Almighty, the Father

the Son, and the Holy Ghost, rest upon this vessel, and upon all who shall embark in it. R. Amen.

¶ Then shall follow this Psalm [Ps. cxxi.].

WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul.

The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for ever

more.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Let us pray.

[ocr errors]

LORD our God, who hast shown great mercy unto us Thy sinful and unworthy servants, upon whom Thy holy Name is called; Put us not to shame for our hope in Thy mercy; but grant us, Lord, these our petitions for salvation, and count us worthy to love and fear Thee with all our hearts,

and to do in all things Thy most holy will. For Thou, O God, art good, and lovest all mankind; and to Thee we ascribe all glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, now and for

evermore.

R. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.

R. Amen.

PRAYER ON PASSING AN ALTAR ON WHICH IS THE HOLY SACRAMENT.

[Note. Parents should remember that it is their duty to instruct their children in the truths of the Christian religion, and for that purpose to acquire sufficient knowledge to enable them to fulfil this duty: none can discharge it so efficiently as parents. following Catechism is designed to assist them, and others upon whom the like office may devolve, in performing it; and to assist the children also in deriving the full benefit of the instruction they receive. contains those principles, both of Christian doctrine and discipline (conveyed in a practical form), which parents are bound to explain in order to prepare their children for admission to the holy Communion, and to give them a due estimate of the Offices of the Christian Ministry. The mode of question and answer is helpful to all concerned, especially in fixing on the memory in early years the truths which Christians ought to know and hold fast through life.

¶ Parents should avail themselves of the Lord's-day, and of other convenient occasions, to catechize their children. And they should take care to instruct them not merely in the letter, but in the meaning, of the answers çontained in this Catechism.

In the case of young children, the questions and answers between brackets, and the whole of Part III., may be omitted.
