Parents should remember that it is their duty to instruct their children in the truths of the Christian religion, and for that purpose to acquire sufficient knowledge to enable them to fulfil this duty: none can discharge it so efficiently as parents. following Catechism is designed to assist them, and others upon whom the like office may devolve, in performing it; and to assist the children also in deriving the full benefit of the instruction they receive. contains those principles, both of Christian doctrine and discipline (conveyed in a practical form), which parents are bound to explain in order to prepare their children for admission to the holy Communion, and to give them a due estimate of the Offices of the Christian Ministry. The mode of question and answer is helpful to all concerned, especially in fixing on the memory in early years the truths which Christians ought to know and hold fast through life. ¶ Parents should avail themselves of the Lord's-day, and of other convenient occasions, to catechize their children. And they should take care to instruct them not merely in the letter, but in the meaning, of the answers çontained in this Catechism.
