believed not in God', and trusted not in his salvation'. Prov. i. 24-28, Because I have called', and ye refused'; I have stretched out my hand', and no man regarded`; But ye have set at nought all my counsel', and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity`; I will mock' when your fear cometh; when your fear' cometh as desolation`, and your destruction' cometh as a whirlwind`; when distress and anguish cometh upon you`; then shall they call upon me', but I will not answer'; they shall seek me early', but they shall not find me. Matth. xi. 23, 24, And thou Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven', shall be brought down to hell`: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom', it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment', than for thee`. John xv. 22, If I had not come and spoken unto them', they had not had sin`: but now they have no cloak for their sin. Heb. iv. 1, Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest', any of you should seem to come short of it`. 7, Again he limiteth a certain day`, saying in David, To-day', after so long a time`; as it is said, To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts`. 11, Let us labour, therefore, to enter into that rest', lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Heb. xii. 17, For ye know how that afterward, when (Esau) would have inherited the blessing', he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance', though he sought it carefully with tears`. 25, See that ye refuse not him that speaketh: for if they escaped not who refused him that spoke on earth', much more shall not we escape', if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven.`

XII. OF REPENTANCE.

Jer. iii. 22, Return, ye backsliding children', and I will heal your backslidings. Behold we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God'.

iv. 4, Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah', and inhabitants of Jerusalem'; lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it', because of the evil of your doings. 14, O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness', that thou

mayest be saved; how long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Jer. xxiv, 7, And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord'; and they shall be my people', and I will be their God; for they shall return unto me' with their whole heart. Lam. iii. 39-41, wherefore doth a living man complain, a man' for the punishment of his sins? Let us search and try our ways', and turn again to the Lord. Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens. Ezek. xxxvi. 31, Then shall ye remember your own evil ways', and your doings that were not good', and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities', and for your abominations`. Hos. vi. 1. Come, and let

us return unto the Lord'; for he hath torn, and he will heat us; he hath smitten', and he will bind us up. Hos. xiv. 1, 2, O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God'; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity`; Take with you words', and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity', and receive us graciously so will we render the calves of our lips`. Joel ii. 13, Rend your heart, and not your garments', and turn unto the Lord your God; for he is gracious' and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness', and repenteth him of the evil. Zech. xii. 10, I will pour upon the house of David`, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace' and of supplications'; and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him', as one mourneth for his only son`, and shall be in bitterness for him', as one that is in bitterness for

his first-born. Matth. ix. i3, But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice': for I am not come to call the righteous', but sinners to repentance.` Luke xiii. 3, I tell you', Nay but except ye repent', ye shall all likewise perish. Luke xv. 10, Likewise, I say unto you', There is joy in the presence of the angels of God' over one sinner that repenteth`. Cor. vii. 10, 11, For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation' not to be repented of`: but the sorrow of the world! worketh death. For, behold, this self-same thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation', yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire', yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge'! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter`. 2 Pet. iii. 9, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to usward', not willing that any should perish', but that all should come to repentance`.

XIII. OUR DUTY TO GOD.

1. To obey God.-Deut. v. 32, Ye shall observe/ to do, therefore, as the Lord your God' hath commanded you`: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. Deut. vi. 17, Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord' your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes', which

he hath commanded thee`. 1 Kings ii. 3, And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways`, to keep his statutes', and his commandments`, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayst prosper in all that thou doest', and whithersoever thou turnest thyself', Ps. cxix, 4, Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. Jer. vii. 23, But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice', and I will be your God', and ye shall be my people`: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you', that it may be well unto you. Matth. xii. 50, For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in heaven', the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. 1 John ii. 3-5, And hereby we do know that we know him', if we keep his commandments`. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments', is a liar,"and the truth' is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word', in him verily is the love of God perfected': hereby know we' that we are in him. 1 John v. 2, By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God', and keep his commandments`.

2. To love God.-Deut. vi. 5, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart`, and with all thy soul', and with all thy might. xi. 1, Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments', and his commandments alway. Ps. xxxi. 23, O love the Lord' all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth
