Lord will not spare him'; but then the anger of the Lord' and his jealousy' shall smoke against that man`, and all the curses that are written in this book' shall lie upon him, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven. Prov. xx. 1, Wine' is a mocker`, strong drink' is raging; and whoso is deceived thereby' is not wise'. Prov. xxi. 17, He that loveth pleasure' shall be a poor man`; he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich'. Prov. xxiii. 1, 2, When thou sittest to eat with a ruler', consider diligently what is before thee; And put a knife to thy throat', if thou be a man given to appetite. 20, 21, Be not among wine-bibbers'; among riotous eaters of flesh': For the drunkard and the glutton' shall come to poverty. 29-35, Who hath woe? who hath sorrow`? who hath contentions`? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine`; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup', when it moveth itself aright: At the last it biteth like a serpent', and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women', and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth' upon the top of a mast`. They have stricken me, shalt thou say', and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not`: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. Isa. v. 11, Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning that they may follow strong drink'; that

continue until night', till wine inflame them'. 24, Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine`, and men of strength' to mingle strong drink; Which justify the wicked for reward', and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble', and the flame consumeth the chaff', so their root shall be as rottenness', and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts', and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel`. Luke xxi. 34, And take heed to yourselves', lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness`, and cares of this life', and so that day come upon you unawares`. Rom. xiii. 13, 14, Let us walk honestly', as in the day`; not in rioting` and drunkenness', not in chambering and wantonness`, not in strife and envying: But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh', to fulfil the lusts thereof'. 1 Cor. v. 11, Now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother' be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator`, or a railer`, or a drunkard', or an extortioner-with such an one' no not to eat. 1 Cor. vi. 10, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards', nor revilers, nor extortioners', shall inherit the' kingdom of God'.

(2.) In Sleep.-Prov. vi. 9-11, How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep'? Yet a little sleep', a little slumber', a little folding of the hands to sleep`: So shall thy

poverty' come as one that travelleth', and thy want' as an armed man'. xx. 13, Love not sleep', lest thou come to poverty: open thine eyes', and thou shalt be satisfied with bread. xxiii. 21, Drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. 1 Thes. v. 6, Therefore let us not sleep as do others'; but let us watch! and be sober'.

(3.) In all things.-1 Cor. vii. 31, And they that use this world' as not abusing it': for the fashion of this world' passeth away. ix. 25, 27, Every man that striveth for the mastery' is temperate in all things'. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown', but we an incorruptible`. I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others', I myself should be a castaway`. Phil. iv. 5, Let your moderation' be known unto all men'. The Lord' is at hand'.

(5.) Contentment.—Matt. vi. 31-34, Therefore take no thought, saying', What shall we eat`? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed`? (For after all these things, do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God', and his righteousness; and all these things' shall be added unto you`. Take there. fore no thought for the morrow`; for the morrow shall take thought' for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Luke xii. 15, And

he said unto them, Take heed', and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth'. Phil. iv. 19, But my God shall supply all your need`, according to his riches in glory', by Christ Jesus'. 1 Tim. vi. 6-11, But godliness with contentment' is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world', and it is certain' we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment', let us therewith be content`. But they that will be rich fall into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts', which drown men in destruction' and perdition. For the love of money' is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after', they have erred from the faith`, and pierced themselves through' with many sorrows.` But thou, O man of God', flee these things'; and follow after righteousness, godliness', faith', love', patience,' meekness'. Heb. xiii. 5, Let your conversation be without covetousness'; and be content with such things' as ye have': for he hath said, I will never leave thee', nor forsake thee`.

6. Humility.-Ps. xxxiv. 18, The Lord is nigh to them' that are of a broken heart; and saveth such' as be of a contrite spirit`. cxxxviii. 6, Though the Lord be high', yet hath he respect unto the lowly` : but the proud he knoweth afar off. Prov. iii. 34, Surely he scorneth' the scorners: but he giveth grace' unto the lowly. Prov. xv. 33, The fear of the Lord' is the instruction of wisdom'; and before honour' is humility. Prov. xvi. 5, Every one that

is proud in heart' is an abomination to the Lord': though hand join in hand' he shall not be unpunished. Prov. xxii. 4, By humility and the fear of the Lord' are riches, honour', and life. Isa. ii. 11, 12, The lofty looks of man' shall be humbled`, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down`, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day`. For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud' and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up, and he shall be brought low. Isa. Ivii. 15, For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity', whose name is Holy`; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite' and humble spirit', to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones'. Luke xvii. 10, So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you', say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that' which was our duty to do. Luke xviii. 13, 14, And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven', but smote upon his breast', saying, God be merciful' to me a sinner. I tell you, This man went down to his house justified' rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself' shall be exalted. 1 Cor. iii.

18, Let no man deceive himself`. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world', let him become a fool, that he may be wise'. iv. 7, For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive`? now, if
