CHA P. II.

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Jofeph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David)

To be taxed with Mary his efpoufed wife, being great with child.

6 And fo it was that while they were there, the days were accomplished that the fhould be delivered.

7 And fhe brought forth her first-born fon, and wrapped him in fwadling clothes, and laid him in a manger, beeause there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the fime country fhepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the

form of a Province: And becaufe all were number'd by their Nations and Families, the Inhabitants of Judea were obliged to repair to the Places where their respective Families had their firft rife, to be number'd there. 'Twas for this reafon that Jofeph, who was defcended from King David, went from Nazareth of Galilee into Judea, and came to the Town of Bethlehem (that being the antient Seat of David's Family) to have his name taken there, together with Mary his Wife, ftill big with child, as fhe had been from the time of their Contract before marriage. While they lodg'd at this plate in an Inn, Mary's time being come, fhe was deliver'd of her firftborn Son. The Inn being full of Guefts, the for want of a more convenient place, was fain to lay the Child to fleep (when the had wrap'd him up in fwadling clothes) as commodioufly as the could in the Stable. The very fame Night in which the was deliver'd, an Angel of God came to fome Shepherds who were watching over their Flocks in thofe parts: As foon as he appear'd, all the place instantly

10 And the angel faid unto
them, Fear not: for behold,
I bring you good tidings of
great joy, which shall be to
all people.

II For unto you is born this day,in the city of David,a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a fign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in fwadling clothes lying in a manger.

13 And fuddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hoft praifing God, and faying,

14 Glory to God in the higheft, and on earth peace, good will towards men.

15 And it came to pafs, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the fhepherds faid one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem,and fee this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto

us.

Thin'd with fuch an extraordinary Light, that the Shepherds were mightily amaz'd' and terrified. Then faid the Angel, Fear not; for I bring you glad Tidings, and fuch as may well occafion the greatest Joy to the whole Jewish Nation; The great Saviour and King, the Meffiah whom you have fo long expected, is born this night at Bethlehem: And the token you shall know him by, if you go thither, is, that you fhall find him wrap'd up in fwadling Clothes, and lying in a Stable. When the Angel had faid this, he afcended again to Heaven, and there was prefently heard a found which feem'd to be the Voices of a Multitude of Angels in the Air praifing God and faying, Glory be given to God in Heaven, and may all kind of Blef-fings defcend on Earth, by which the Favour and Mercy of God may be exprefs'd to men. After this the Angels return'd into Heaven, and the Shepherds refolv'd' to run to Bethlehem, that they might fee with their Eyes the truth of what had been

16 And they came with hafte, and found Mary and Jofeph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had feen it, they made known abroad the faying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it, wondred at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all thefe things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praifing God, for all the things that they had heard and feen, as it was told unto them.

reveal'd to them. They went immediately with as much Expedition as they could, and found Jofeph and Mary, and the Child yet lying in the Stable. When they had feen the Infant, they told fofeph and Mary and the reft, what a Revelation they had had concerning this Child, as they were watching in the Fields in the night; which did not a little excite the wonder of all that heard them. But Mary efpecially carefully treafur'd up in her Memory whatever the heard concerning her Son. The Shepherds after this return'd to their Flock glorifying and praifing God, that he had been pleas'd to honour 'em with fuch a glorious Vifion of Angels, and a fight of the Meffiah.

Now becaufe Jefus was commonly reputed to be the fon of Jofeph, and indeed was adopted by him, tho he was begotten without the concurrence of Him or any sther Man; I shall fubjoin the Genealogy of Jofeph, who deriv'd his Birth from
