A silent Lamb to slaughter led,
The bruised, the suffering, and the dead. 8 The Lord will come! a dreadful form, With wreath of flame, and robe of storm, On cherub-wings, and wings of wind, Appointed Judge of all mankind.
4 Can this be He, once wont to stray A Pilgrim on the world's highway, Oppressed by power, and mocked by pride, The Nazarene,-the Crucified?
5 While sinners in despair shall call, "Rocks, hide us; mountains, on us fall!" The saints, ascending from the tomb, Shall joyful sing, "The Lord is come.!"
HE Lord of Might from Sinai's brow Gave forth His voice of thunder; And Israel lay on earth below,
Outstretched in fear and wonder; Beneath His feet was pitchy night, And at His left hand and His right The rocks were rent asunder.
2 The Lord of Love, on Calvary, A meek and suffering stranger, Upraised to heaven His languid eye, In nature's hour of danger; For us, He bore the weight of woe, For us, He gave His blood to flow, And met His Father's anger.
8 The Lord of Love, the Lord of Might, The King of all created,
Shall back return to claim His right, On clouds of glory seated;
With trumpet-sound and angel-song, And hallelujahs loud and long, O'er death and hell defeated.
COME, Desire of nations, come!
Hasten, Lord, the general doom!
Hear the Spirit and the Bride; Come, and take us to Thy side. 2 Thou, who hast our place prepared, Make us meet for our reward; Then with all Thy saints descend; Then our earthly trials end. 3 Mindful of Thy chosen race, Shorten these vindictive days; Who for full redemption groan, Hear us now, and save Thine own. 4 Now destroy the Man of Sin; Now Thine ancient flock bring in; Filled with righteousness divine, Claim a ransomed world for Thine. 5 Plant Thy heavenly kingdom here; Glorious in Thy saints appear; Speak the sacred number sealed; Speak the mystery fulfilled. 6 Take to Thee Thy royal power; Reign, when sin shall be no more; Reign, when time no more shall be, Reign to all eternity.
ORD, we believe to us and ours The apostolic promise given;
We wait the Pentecostal powers,
The Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. 2 Ah! leave us not to mourn below, Or long for Thy return to pine; Now, Lord, the Comforter bestow, And fix in us the Guest Divine. 8 Assembled here with one accord, Calmly we wait the promised grace, The purchase of our dying Lord, Come, Holy Ghost, and fill the place! 4 If every one that asks may find, If still Thou dost on sinners fall,
Come as a mighty rushing wind; Great grace be now upon us all. 5 Behold, to Thee our souls aspire, And languish Thy descent to meet: Kindle in each the living fire, And fix in every heart Thy seat. 6 Spirit of faith, within us live, Sweetly within our bosoms move, Open our mouths, and utterance give, To publish our Redeemer's love.
LORD God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,
As on the day of Pentecost, Descend in all Thy power: We meet with one accord In our appointed place, And wait the promise of our Lord, The Spirit of all grace.
2 Like mighty rushing wind Upon the waves beneath,
Move with one impulse every mind,
One soul, one feeling breathe: The young, the old inspire
With wisdom from above;
And give us hearts and tongues of fire To pray, and praise, and love.
Spirit of Light, explore,
And chase our gloom away,
With lustre shining more and more Unto the perfect day:
Spirit of Truth, be Thou In life and death our guide; O Spirit of adoption, now May we be sanctified!
FATHER of our dying Lord,
Remember us for good;
O fulfil His faithful word, And hear His speaking blood!
Give us that for which He prays: Father, glorify Thy Son!
Show His truth, and power, and grace, And send the Promise down.
2 True and faithful Witness, Thou, O Christ, Thy Spirit give! Hast Thou not received Him now, That we might now receive? Art Thou not our living Head? Life to all Thy limbs impart, Shed Thy love, Thy Spirit shed In every waiting heart.
3 Holy Ghost, the Comforter, The gift of Jesus, come;
Glows our heart to find Thee near, And swells to make Thee room. Present with us Thee we feel,
Come, O come, and in us be! With us, in us, live and dwell, To all eternity.
YOME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all Thy quickening powers,
Kindle a flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
2 In vain we tune our formal songs, In vain we strive to rise;
Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies.
3 Dear Lord! and shall we ever live At this poor dying rate?
Our love so faint, so cold to Thee, And Thine to us so great!
4 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all Thy quickening powers: Come, shed abroad the Saviour's love, And that shall kindle ours.
SPIRIT Divine, attend our prayers, And make our hearts Thy home:
Descend with all Thy gracious powers, O come-Great Spirit-come! 2 Come as the light-to us reveal Our emptiness and woe;
And lead us in those paths of life Where all the righteous go.
3 Come as the fire-and purge our hearts Like sacrificial flame;
Let our whole soul an offering be To our Redeemer's name.
4 Come as the dew-and sweetly bless This consecrated hour;
May barrenness rejoice to own Thy fertilizing power.
5 Come as the dove and spread Thy wings, The wings of peaceful love;
And let Thy church on earth become Blest as the church above.
6 Come as the wind-with rushing sound And pentecostal grace;
That all of woman born may see The glory of Thy face.
7 Spirit Divine! attend our prayers, Make a lost world Thy home; Descend with all Thy gracious O come-Great Spirit-come
Let Thy bright beams arise;
Dispel the darkness from our minds, And open all our eyes.
Convince us of our sin;
Then lead to Jesu's blood,
And to our wondering view reveal The secret love of God.
Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our breasts the flame Of never-dying love.
