253,

The Epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the PHILIPPIANS. (Acts, 30.)

FROM what is stated in the epistle itself it may be gathered, that the epistle to the Philippians was written by St. Paul towards the close of his first imprisonment at Rome.

The circumstance of the apostle expecting a speedy release (ii., 24), which would enable him to resume his delightful duty of proclaiming the gospel, perhaps contributes to the fine tone, elevated sentiments, and lively style of this interesting epistle; but its immediate occasion is what chiefly accounts for the pleasing difference between this and some other epistles.

Besides the presentation of Christian truth, each of St. Paul's epistles shews us the exhibition of religion on the character when placed in certain circumstances; and in this epistle is seen the warmhearted apostle expressing his thanks for the affectionate thoughtfulness of the Philippians, who had now a second time sent money for his support.

In the epistle to the Corinthians we see Paul exhibiting a sternness of resolve and great tenderness of dealing with a somewhat wayward and almost unamiable people; in this epistle is shewn us kindness and simplicity of intention on the one hand, and a graceful yet dignified acceptance of their bounty on the other.

Philippi was a Roman colony (Acts. xvi., 12), and was perhaps from this circumstance free from the Jewish prejudices which vexed some other communities, and which led those who were blinded by them to regard the apostle in a false light; and the very observable affection of the Philippians towards Paul might arise from their remembrance of what the apostle suffered when he preached the gospel to them at the first. The apostle's calm yet cheerful temper towards some who even in preaching the gospel forgot their Christianity (ch. i., 15), ought not to be unnoticed as a pattern under analogous circumstances.
