The Second Epistle of JOHN.

THIS second epistle touches on the same topics as the first epistle, from which it may be conjectured that it was written about the same time.

It is quoted by the writers of the second century. Who the elect lady, or the Lady Eclecta, or the elect Cyria was, is altogether uncertain,-probably some eminent lady who rejoiced to contribute of her substance to the cause of Christ.

The Third Epistle of JOHN.

THIS epistle, like the last, is addressed to a particular person-Gaius or Caius-of whom nothing is known. Diotrephes named in it was probably some unamiable person of station and influence in the church of which Gaius was a member, who is left on record as an example of the evil effects of a love of power.

We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth. I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, receiveth us not. 10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, c2 Jno. 12. prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. The general Epistle of JUDE.

THE author of this epistle was Jude, called Lebbæus and Thaddeus by St. Matthew (Mat. x., 3).

'Its genuineness has been called in question both in ancient and modern times, but it is now generally received as canonical. It was placed by Eusebius amongst the antilegomena (contradicted or disputed books); by which we are to understand not books known to be spurious, but books which were not known to all to be genuine. As the early Christians were in danger of being imposed on by spurious gospels and epistles, as well as by false Christs and false doctrines, they were naturally careful as to what they received; and we have reason rather to rejoice that they exercised so much caution.

The objections of the moderns, founded on an apparent citation from two apocryphal books, viz., "The Book of Enoch" and "The Assumption of Moses," may be sufficiently met by the highly probable conjecture, that these two books were made long after the epistle, and that Jude quoted some Jewish traditions apposite to his purpose, and admitted by those whom he addressed, however obscure they may be to us.

This epistle bears a great resemblance to the second of St. Peter, and was written probably to counteract the same corrupt teaching on the part of some who pretended their Christian liberty as an excuse for sensual indulgence. It was most likely, as its name denotes, a catholic epistle, intended for professed Christians generally. Its date must be fixed not earlier than the year 65.
