THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. LUKE.

OF the personal history of Luke, the author of this Gospel, not much is known. He refers to himself for the first time in Acts xvi. 10, 11, as the companion of Paul at Troas; and he alludes to himself again repeatedly in the same character. It is believed that he was the same who is mentioned in Col. iv. 14; 2 Tim. iv. 11; and Philemon ver. 24.

He was probably a gentile, and, according to ecclesiastical tradition, a native of Antioch; a supposition which is entirely in keeping with his mode of referring to that city in the Acts.

In Col. iv. 14, he is styled "the beloved physician," and the use he makes of correct medical phraseology confirms the application of the passage to him. This title, although it does not imply so much as the name conveys to modern ears, renders it certain that he was a man of education. This Gospel is evidently the production of an intelligent and well-informed Greek. But his very extensive and accurate acquaintance with all Jewish rites and usages, arose most probably from his close intimacy with St. Paul. Indeed the spirit of the great apostle of the gentiles pervades every page of this very full and comprehensive Gospel, which is not Jewish but universal; presenting to us Jesus as the desire of all nations, the great Deliverer, who was to satisfy the expectations of the whole family of man. That this was the idea of St. Luke may be gathered from his not recording our Lord's prohibition to the twelve from going into any villages of the Samaritans, and his tracing the genealogy of Jesus up to Adam. St. Luke was not an eye witness of what he records, but he accurately investigated every thing, deriving his information, as he tells us, from original sources (i. 3.); either from the testimony of others, such as the mother of our Lord, or from authentic documents, such as the Jewish genealogies and the Roman registers.

St. Luke differs from the "many" who had undertaken to narrate the life and sayings of our Lord, in his being under the superintendence of that Divine Spirit, which, while it left the sacred writers under the guidance of their own judgment, infallibly preserved them from error. It was probably composed during Paul's imprisonment at Cæsarea, about the year 58, and published at Rome during Paul's first imprisonment.
