I. Gra- cious Spirit, dwell with me: I my self would gra-cious be;

9:24 564

And, with words that help and heal, Would Thy life in mine

reveal;

And, with actions bold and meek, Would for Christ my Sav-iour speak. A-MEN.

2 Truthful Spirit, dwell with me:
I myself would truthful be;
And, with wisdom kind and clear,
Let Thy life in mine appear;
And, with actions brotherly,
Speak my Lord's sincerity,

3 Silent Spirit, dwell with me:
I myself would quiet be,
Quiet as the growing blade,
Which through earth its way hath made
Silently, like morning light,

Putting mists and chills to flight.

4 Mighty Spirit, dwell with me:
I myself would mighty be,
Mighty so as to prevail
Where unaided man must fail;
Ever by a mighty hope,
Pressing on and bearing up.

5 Holy Spirit, dwell with me:
I myself would holy be;
Separate from sin, I would
Choose and cherish all things good,
And whatever I can be,

Give to Him who gave me Thee.

1. Holy Spirit, Truth divine, Dawn up - on this soul of mine;

9:3 54

Word of God, and In-ward Light, Wake my spirit, clear my sight. A - MEN.

[blocks in formation]

Chase the shade of night a-way, Turn my darkness into day.

A-MEN.

2 Holy Ghost, with power divine, Cleanse this guilty heart of mine; Long has sin, without control, Held dominion o'er my soul.

3 Holy Ghost, with joy divine,

Cheer this saddened heart of mine;

239

Bid my many woes depart,

Heal my wounded, bleeding heart. 4 Holy Spirit, all divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine,
Cast down every idol throne;
Reign supreme, and reign alone.

our souls a - bide;

Ŏ-pen our eyes to see a- right, In- to all truth our footsteps guide. A-MEN.

[blocks in formation]

I may love what Thou dost love, And do what Thou wouldst do. A-MEN.

2 Breathe on me, Breath of God,

Until my heart is pure,

Until with Thee I will one will,
To do, or to endure.

3 Breathe on me, Breath of God, Till I am wholly Thine,

240

Till all this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

4 Breathe on me, Breath of God,
So shall I never die;

But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

earth, thro' all its pulses move; Stoop to my weak-ness, might-y as Thou

art,

And make me love Thee as I ought to love. A-MEN.

2 I ask no dream, no prophet-ecstasies;
No sudden rending of the veil of clay;

No angel-visitant, no opening skies;

But take the dimness of my soul away.

3 Hast Thou not bid us love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own, soul, heart, and strength, and mind,

I see Thy cross-there teach my heart to cling:

O let me seek Thee, and O let me find.

4 Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh;
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;

Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.

5 Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame;
The baptism of the heaven-descended Dove,
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.

George Croly, 1854
