Dear Sir,

Shall make no Apology for offering you the following Work, however mean and unworthy of fuch a Patron ; because I am perfuaded that your Regard for the Subject of which it treats, as well as your Partiality tó the Author, will render it a Prefent not altogether unacceptable. An humble Attempt to vindicate the Doctrines, and enforce the Duties, of our holy Religion, cannot fail to be approved of

by One, who is fo fteady in his Belief of the former, and fo exemplary in his Practice of the latter. Those extraordinary Talents and Abilities, wherewith God has bleffed you, have not been perverted (as is too often the Case) to espouse the Caufe of Infidelity and Libertinifm; but have been conftantly employed in promoting the public Good, and thereby, in the trueft Sense, dedicated to the Service of Him who bestowed them. Firm in your Principles, uniform and confiftent in your Conduct, equally zealous for the Honour of the Sovereign, and the Welfare of the Community (Objects, which are by no means incongruous, and ought never to be separated) you have always fhone, a bright Example of fincere Loyalty and true Patriotism: admired and beloved by the Good and Worthy; and cenfured

cenfured by thofe only, whofe Praise would be a Disgrace. If you have Enemies, they are fuch as appear by their Actions to be Enemies to their King and Country; Enemies to Government in general, and to that Spirit of Obedience and Submission to the HIGHER POWERS, which the Scriptures fo ftrongly inculcate, and which our excellent Church, in Conformity to them, fo ftrenuously

maintains.

The Share you have taken for many Years in our Parliamentary Debates has gained you the most deferved Esteem and Applaufe. Good Sense, ftrong Reafoning, and manly Eloquence (equally remote from intemperate Heat, and lukewarm Timidity) characterize all your Speeches. A clear Head, and
