other things blasphemously spake they against him.

6"When the morning was come, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor, who asked him, saying, 'Art thou the King of the Jews?' And Jesus said unto him, 'Thou sayest.' And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 'And Pilate went out unto the Jews, and saith unto them, 'I find in him no fault at all.' And they were the more fierce, saying, 'He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.' When Pilate heard of Galilee, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. And when he saw Jesus, he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

"Now at that feast Pilate released unto the people one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, who lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder, 10 and was a robber. "Therefore, when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, 'Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?' (For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.) 12 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release

Barabbas unto them. 13 And they cried out all at once, saying, 'Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas.' Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. But they cried, saying, 'Crucify him, crucify him.' And he saith unto them the third time, 'Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.' And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him, 15 and delivered him to be crucified.

:

"Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. 16 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called Golgotha. 17 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

"And when they were come to the place

which is called Calvary, 18 they gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 19 And they also gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh but he received it not. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And with him they crucified two thieves; the one on his right hand and the other on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, 'He was numbered with the transgressors.' 20 Then said Jesus, 'Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.' 21 And they parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, 'They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.' And sitting down, they watched him there; and set up over his head his accusation written, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, 'Save thyself,-If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.' Likewise, also the chief priests mocked him, with the scribes and elders, and the thieves also which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

22❝ And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land, until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, 'Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?' which is, being interpreted, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?'

23 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, 'I thirst.' And they

filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, 'It is finished.' And he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

24 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; and the graves were opened. Now, when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God.' 25 And one

of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came thereout blood and water. And he that saw it bear record, and his record is true; and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

26 ( "When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, and begged the body of Jesus. And he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre and departed.

27In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow.

"And the angel said unto the women, 'Fear not ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here; for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead.'

29 And they returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven; 29 to whom also Jesus shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. And being assembled together with them, 30 he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven; 31 and a cloud received him out of their sight."

The riches of redeeming grace.

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and with
