Peace of mind have they who ascribe all good to the LORD; disquiet and elation come the moment they ascribe it to themselves. Ascribing all good to Him, they live in peace, satisfied with their Father's bounty, spiritual and natural.

VIII. To be hated and tried on account of our efforts to do what is good and right, takes away what is selfish and unreasonable in us. Evil is aroused by temptation; and this for the purpose of making its quality fully known. To be faithful in temptations is to hold to the good, and frankly to give up the evil. Thus is the kingdom of Heaven established.

IX. When repentance has been thoroughly done, and no evil is harbored or excused, then whatever evil is spoken against us is falsely spoken. Then the love for what the LORD gives is exalted and strengthened by seeing that nothing can truly be said against it. Peace and full support also are given from the consciousness that the truth and goodness we love are the LORD's, and that He is in them and protects them.

X. The persecution of the prophets represents the opposition of self and the world to the truth, and a life according to it.

The reward of faithfulness to the truth is the entire freeing of the mind from the loves of self and the world, and the undisturbed enjoyment of the delights of wisdom and of peaceful love given by the Spirit of GOD.

THE

THE LORD'S PRAYER.

HE LORD teaches us to pray for the good things which He loves to give. Whatever prevents our asking sincerely, prevents our reception also.

I. Our Father who art in the heavens.

We sincerely address these words to the LORD when we acknowledge that from Him we live, because He every moment loves us and gives us life; that He loves not us alone, but all; that His Presence in us is heaven, because "the Divine of the LORD makes heaven."

II. Hallowed be Thy name.

His Name is hallowed when we love with a holy love Himself

and all things that are from Him;-when we love to read his Word, to meditate upon it, to understand it and apply it to life ; when we love the truth concerning Him and his kingdom; and especially when we love his Divine Human Presence.

III. Thy kingdom come.

To repeat this petition sincerely we must ourselves be faithful subjects; loving to learn his commands and to do them; considering always what is right, because He commands it; and not what is for our own interest.

IV. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also upon the earth.

We are to prefer his will to our own,-to keep our will subdued, pliant, promptly obedient; giving it up the moment we perceive that it is not also his,—that it is not right, or not wise or not according to his Providence. We are to do his work every day, as the angels do in heaven.

V. Give us this day our daily bread.

The bread that the LORD gives is his own goodness and wisdom. The prayer requires therefore repentance of all un

charitableness.

We are to seek first the heavenly bread, and then natural good things so far as they are needful.

VI. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. We owe the LORD for everything, and have nothing of our own to pay. He forgives us all that debt, and makes us his friends, honorable through his gracious gifts, on one condition, -that we also think, with Him, not of what others owe to us, or how they can serve us; but of what we can do to make them more free, more worthy.

VII. And lead us not into temptation.

One who desires not to be led into temptation, will not lightly seek it, nor be careless of safeguards. He will remember that the same voluntary dependencę upon the LORD that is necessary to attain goodness, is necessary to preserve it. He will watch and pray that his heart may not be lifted up, and forget the LORD, and perish. (Deut. viii.)

VIII. But deliver us from evil.

He who sincerely desires to be delivered from evil, will desire to see wherein he is in evil. He will neither justify it nor confirm it; but will pray that the truth may make him free, no matter at what cost of natural feeling.

IX. X. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for ever. Amen.

Herein is contained a full acknowledgment that truth and goodness are the LORD'S alone; that returns for good work are his also; and that his sending us to do his work, blessing us with the joy of it, and sustaining us with the returns, is of his Infinite and abundant goodness.

Here may be offered the suitable prayers from the Collection, and at the close, or in place of all other prayers, all may join in offering:—

OUR

THE LORD'S PRAYER.

UR FATHER who art in the heavens: Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also upon the earth. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for ever. Amen.

Then may follow Responsive Service XII; or a Selection (87, 90) may be sung.

The Service may be closed with either of the following Benedictions:

THE grace of our LORD JESUS CHRIST be with you

all. Amen.

GRACE be unto you and peace, from Him who is,

who was, and who is to come. Amen.

THE

OFFERTORY AND THANKSGIVING.

After the Sermon, the Minister, going to the Altar, may read one or more of the following passages; during which the offerings of the people may be collected, and on the days of the Communion the Bread and Wine placed upon the Altar.

HAT shall I render unto the LORD for all his bene.

WHAT

fits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the LORD. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people: in the courts of the LORD's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem.

THE sacrifices of GoD are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O GOD, thou wilt not despise.

FROM the rising of the sun to the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles: and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name and a pure offering.

THE eyes of all wait upon Thee, O LORD, and thou givest them their meat in due season: Thou openest thine hand and satisfiest the desire of every living

THOU preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over.

SACRIFICE and offering Thou didst not desire: mine ears hast Thou opened: burnt-offering and sin-offering hast Thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me.

AND Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof, and the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.

AND Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high GOD.

AND Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son: and called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh as it is said to this day: In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

I WILL wash mine hands in innocency, so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: that I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

JESUS said, If thou wilt be perfect go and sell all that thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.

A NEW Commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

IF thou bring thy gift to the altar and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way; first be
