XXXII. As the 148th. L. H. C.

Eternal and unchangeable love. 2 Tim. i. 12. Chap. ii. 13. Phil. i. 6.

OMY distrustful heart,

How small thy faith appears! But greater, Lord, thou art,

Than all my doubts and fears: Did Jesus once upon me shine? Then Jesus is for ever mine. Unchangeable his will,

Though dark may be my frame; His loving heart is still

Eternally the same:

My soul through many changes goes;
His love no variation knows.

3 Thou, Lord, wilt carry on,
And perfectly perform
The work thou hast begun
In me a sinful worm;

'Midst all my fears, and sin and wof,
Thy spirit will not let me go.

4 The bowels of thy grace
At first did freely move:
I still shall see thy face,
And feel that God is love!
Myself into thy arms I cast;
Lord, save, O save my soul at last.

ADOPTION.

XXXIII. C. M.

DODDRIDGE.

Abba, Father. Gal. iv. 6.

1 SOVREIGN of all the worlds on high Allow my humble claim;

[ocr errors]

Nor, while a worm would raise its head,
Disdain a father's name.

2 My Father God! how sweet the sound!
How tender, and how dear!
Not all the harmony of heaven
Could so delight the ear.

3 Come, sacred Spirit, seal the name.
On my expanding heart;
And show, that in Jehovah's grace
I share a filial part.

3 Cheer'd by a signal so divine,
Unwavering I believe;
And Abba, Father, humbly cry,
Nor can the sign deceive.

COVENANT,

DODBRIDGE.

Support in God's covenant under trouble 2 Sam. xxiii. 5.

· Μ

Y God, the cov'nant of thy love
Abides for ever sure,

And in its matchless grace I feel

My happiness secure.

2 What though my house be not with thee,
As nature could desire?
To nobler joys than nature gives,
Thy servants all aspire.

Since thou, the everlasting God,
My father art become;
Jesus my guardian and my friend,
And heaven my final home;

4 I welcome all thy sov'reign will,
For all that will is love:

"

And when I know not what thou dost,

I wait the light above.

5. Thy cov'nant the last accent claims Of this poor falt'ring tongue;

1

And that shall the first notes employ
Of my celestial song.

XXXV. 112th. BENTLEY'S COLLEC. Pleading the covenant. Psalm lxxiv. 20. LORD my God, whose sov❜reign love Is still the same, nor e'er can move; Look to the covenant, and see,

O

Has not thy love been shown to me?
Remember me, my dearest friend,
And love me alway to the end.

2 Be with me still, as heretofore,

1

And help me forward more and more;
My strong, my stubborn will incline
To be obedient still to thine:

O lead me by thy gracious hand,
And guide me safe to Canaan's land.

Redemption by Christ alone. 1 Pet. i. 18, 19. ENSLAV'D by sin and bound in chains,

Beneath its dreadful tyrant sway,

And doom'd to everlasting pains,

We wretched, guilty captives lay.

2 Nor gold nor gems could buy our peace; Nor the whole world's collected store Suffice to purchase our release;

A thousand worlds were all too poor.

3 Jesus the Lord, the mighty God, An all-sufficient ransom paid

Invalu'd price! his precious blood
For vile rebellious traitors shed.

4 Jesus the sacrifice became

To rescue guilty souls from hell;
The spotless, bleeding, dying Lamb,
Beneath avenging justice fell.
5 Amazing goodness! love divine!
O may our grateful hearts adore
The matchless grace, nor yield to sin,
Nor wear its cruel fetters more!

6 Dear Saviour, let thy love pursue
The glorious work it has begun,
Each secret lurking foe subdue,

And let our hearts be thine alone.

XXXVII. L. M. S. STENNETT. It is finished. John xix. 30. 'TIS finish' so the Saviour cried, And meekly bow'd his head and died, "Tis finish'd-yes, the race is run, The battle fought, the victory won. "Tis finish'd-all that Heaven decreed, And all the ancient prophets said Is now fulfill'd, as was design'd, In me the Saviour of mankind.

3 'Tis finish'd-Aaron now no more
Must stain his robes with purple gore:
The sacred veil is rent in twain,
And Jewish rites no more remain.

4 'Tis finish'd-this my dying groan
Shall sins of ev'ry kind atone:
Millions shall be redeem'd from death,
By this, my last expiring breath.

'Tis finish'd-let the joyful sound

Be heard through all the nations round:
'Tis finish'd-let the echo fly

Thro' heav'n and hell, thro' earth and sky.

EFFICACY OF GRACE.

XXXVIII. C. M. TOPLADY'S COLLEC.

HA

Efficacious grace. Psalm xlv.

AIL! mighty Jesus, how divine
Is thy victorious sword!

The stoutest rebel must resign,

At thy commanding word.

2 Deep are the wounds thy arrows give
They pierce the hardest heart:
Thy smiles of grace the slain revive,
And joy succeeds the smart.

3 Still gird thy sword upon thy thigh,
Ride with majestic sway:

Go forth, sweet prince, triumphantly,
And make thy foes obey.

4 And when thy victories are complete;
When all the chosen race
Shall round the throne of glory meet,
To sing thy conq'ring grace;

5 O may my humble soul be found
Among that favour'd band!

And I, with them, thy praise will sound
Throughout Immanuel's land.
