GENESIS

i. 26.

And God faid let us make man in our image after our likeness.

F

ROM the Scriptures we learn, and by faith we understand, that the worlds were framed by the word of GOD;

for whose pleasure they are and were created: upon him therefore, who gave Being to the worlds and all that is therein, muft every creature neceffarily, and continually depend, and that for all things.

In the preceding verfes is a fhort, but fublime Defcription of the creation of the heavens and the earth with all their hofts by the word, and fpirit of JEHOVAH.----He spake and it was done, be commanded and they were created t. GoD

Heb. xi. a

B
+ Pfal. clxviii. 5.

GOD having thus made the world, and richly furnished it with every creature, wherein the glory of his wisdom, goodness, and power, might be feen; he finished his great defign, by creating man in his own image; whom he fitted for, and deputed to be his reprefentative, and vicegerent in the earth; for which honourable station and government, man was peculiarly qualified, being as to his body formed out of the duft in common with other terrestrial animals; when his immortal foul which JEHOVAH breathed into him, was of a nobler fubftance.

By this diftinction of nature in one person, man was fitted to rule over every creature with fympathetic regard, and enjoy the bleffings of an earthly paradife; whilft at the fame time his rational foul correfponded, and held communion with God and his holy angels. Being thus fearfully and wonderfully made (his dwelling-place on earth, and his conversation in heaven;) he was by nature formed, and {taught of God, both to govern, and obey: whilst Lord of all beneath, he was fubject to the God that is above, who created man in his own, image, &c. which in the text, is thus expreffed: And God faid, let us make man in our image after our likeness,

FIRST, hall endeavour to explain the words. SECONDLY, Prove that man was made in the image of God."

AND LASTLY, Conclude with fuitable inferences:

LET

LET us make, or rather according to the Hebrew*, we will make man; thus fignifying, that the time of man's creation before determined, was then fully come; as if God had faid, there remains nothing to be crested in all the earth as fettled in the counfels heaven,except man; whom we decreed to make in of our own image: therefore we will now make man.

THE words by no means intimate, that a coun fel was then held between the divine perfons in the Godhead concerning man's creation for the counfels of God were finished before his work began; creation being only the effect of God's eternal purpose, who worketh all things after the coun fel of his own will†; but he then began to execute his glorious purpose, when he laid the foundations of the earth, and built his ftories in the heavens; finifhing his fix days work with man's creation thus God performed in time, what he had planned in eternity.

THERE is not an atom in nature, nor an incident in life to the fmalleft infect, but God foreknew in his infinite underftanding, and fettled by an immutable decree before ever the world wasThe very hairs of your head are all numbered, there is no fuch thing as cafualty or chance with JEHOVAH our GOD: for known unto GOD are all bis works from the beginning of the world §.
